I was installing mud flaps on the wife's new Prius.. I distinctly got the feeling that the front fenders are made of plastic....when installing the flaps, you have to drill a 1/4" hole for the clips - I got what looks like plastic shavings. Anyone know in general where plastics are used in Priuses replacing common sheet metal? And what kind of plastic is it??
Of course the Prius fenders are made of plastic. As far as I know, the fenders of all modern cars are made of plastic. What else could they be made of?
And the plastic is very soft, easily scratched and black underneath the paint job. Gee, do I sound like I'm unhappy with them? I am, but it's one of the very few things I don't like about the car.
The soft part is the liner. It is composed of 2 layers a harder one and a foam layer under. It is there to protect the actual fender from road debris thrown up by the tires. There is sterner stuff under the soft stuff.
