A parent wants this Garmin SmartDrive 66 in the car, preferably not on windshield, but rather in the center console. My question involves how to run the power cord from behind the compartment and down through to floor, instead of having it hang out the side as seen here. We wish to conveniently conceal the unit when not in use, unplugging it, setting it in the compartment, and closing its door.

This may involve taking off part of the lower dash assembly, which I expect to be a mess and would rather avoid. Plus drilling out a hole for the cord to pass through. Curious if this can be done without taking apart too much.

Yes, it is possible to do this.
You can drill a small hole in the box under the radio and run a wire with a connector to connect the Garmin.
The other end of the wire can be brought out to the back of the cigarette lighter.
It is located near the bottom of the box under the radio.

Removing the radio to get to the box is also easy.

Thank you - have just watched the video instructions on this for the first time and can't quite tell if it's necessary to remove all of what's shown just to drill a hole in the back of the box compartment. It seems that I could just pull out the bottom panel.

I don't have the clip removal tool and must attempt this today - what's a good substitute?

Almost everything can be unscrewed with a 10 mm socket and a screwdriver.
The plastic pins at the bottom hold the gray element at the bottom.
If you don't have a special device for removing the clips, you can carefully pull them out with a flat screwdriver.
