Pistol Safe?

Has anyone seen someone that has added a pistol safe to their Prius? Or knows of a good place to mount one near the drivers seat?

I live in a decent area of town but it is a historical district so we are surrounded by some very "shady" areas. I keep a pistol in my car but we've started to have a lot of people breaking into cars.

    I saw this at Costco:

    | Sentry® Safe | Quick Access Pistol Safe - The latest in home defense technology!

I was thinking that I could mount it somewhere, possibly drill into the body of the car(obviously watching where I drilled through). Not sure if that's a great idea but if I add some sealant/caulk, there shouldn't be any issues. I haven't ever taken apart any of the consoles so I'm not sure if there was anything sturdy in the car where I could bolt the safe.

There are several previous threads about this somewhere here on PC, with ideas and actual photos. Unfortunately, some of them degenerated and were exiled to Fred's House of Politics, making them harder to access.

Haha, so they created a "safe space" in the PriusChat forums? I'll have to look around for them, I'd rather not be the guinea pig for drilling into a Prius. That being said, I am pretty good at figuring out car issues/solutions.

    That's a nice looking safe.
I would prefer to never leave a firearm in a vehicle. When returning home, obviously I'd take it in the house with me.

But if I was parked at a restaurant, shopping center, movie, etc, then yes, some kind of safe might be necessary. (And I would cover up the safe with a towel or something.)

Not to mention that you will have to carry a conceal fire arm license.

I already have one. I constantly forget to grab it if I take it into my house. If it leaves my house it's either in my center console or on my hip.

No such thing in California, for the good guys.

But just about every thug is armed.

Yep and that somehow that doesn't apply to politicians like Pelosi and Feinstein. They fight to take guns away while they have a pistol permit.

OK everybody....you need to read this very quickly because whenever somebody hits a G-spot (Guns,God, GOP, Global Warming, etc....) then you-know-who will run crying to a moderator.

The biometric/combo safes are better than nothing, but only if they're very securely attached to the vehicle.
Otherwise you're just making it easier for a thief to locate the firearm, steal the safe and weapon together, and work the puzzle out later.

One other thing that you can do if you carry one of the popular newer tupperware pistols is to remove the magazine (never call them a clip in front of a gun nut) the barrel and the spring and carry just the receiver inside. That's technically "the gun" since it's the part with the serial number, but it's not a complete firearm, and whoever breaks into your car will only get pieces/parts and not a firearm. Also only a cretin would have a problem with you having a part of a weapon in your purse or pocket. Every now and again, I have to go into a place that displays a sign prohibiting weapons, and I'll just carry the receiver, or if I absolutely HAVE TO, I'll disassemble the weapon as described above and put the receiver some place different than the rest of the parts.
NOTE: Airports and other places like schools and courtrooms are a notable exception, and gunowners should always be law abiders - meaning that they KNOW where they can and cannot carry.

I never leave a weapon unattended in a vehicle any longer than I have to and especially never over night.

Actually, it IS possible for an average good-guy type to get a CCW in CA, but it depends on which county you live in. The law says, however, that a CCW holder cannot legally leave a weapon in an unoccupied vehicle unless it meets certain conditions, one of which is being locked into a hard sided case or safe. I have one secured with a cable in my hatch area, which meets the legal requirements, although I think it would be better to have it more permanently mounted. My car is pretty new and I'm still working on getting it set up.
