Pikes Peak

I've been curious as to how the brakes would hold up coming down. Two weeks from now we'll be making a trip to California and I've thought about swinging by Pikes Peak on the way back. My wife has never been up it.

 

Yes, many Prii have been up there. Due to snow the road was open only to Devil's Playground (about 12,950 feet) the day I was there, so we had to hoof it up to the top.

On the descent, B mode didn't provide enough braking to match the low speed of numerous others downshifted to the right speed for their cars, and passing was out of the question, so I was riding the friction brakes heavily. So I took several brake cooling stops. But at the mandatory brake checkpoint, the attendant was quite happy with my brake disc temperature.

I've done quite a few trips through the Sierra Nevada and White Mountains and never had a problem. The highest was 12,470ft. at Barcroft Station.

 

Yep, took my 2007 all the way to the top along with my wife, my german shepard, and a bunch of camping gear. Made it to the top without any issues, and no issues on the way down either. Used 'B' mode on the way down and had a full battery at the bottom. Still had to use the brakes, but no issues with the brake temperature. Drove straight through from the top of Pike's Peak all the way to Chicago stopping only twice for gasoline.

 

It was a long time ago that I rode up with my father in an old Ford. At that time the road was not (fully) paved.

Has that changed? Is it now paved all the way?
