My favorite thing! * 11:00 pm - Sleeping on the bed! My favorite thing! Excerpts from a Cat's Diary Day 983 of my captivity. My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength. The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet. Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a "good little hunter" I am. There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of "allergies." I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage. Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow --but at the top of the stairs. I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded. The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicate with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now . . .

That was pretty funny. Anybody else affected by the pet food (melamine) recall? My 120 pound Weimeraner has been fed Sensible choic for years, and I just found it was recalled. I read all the reports about it and had trouble finding a list of syptoms to watch for. So I called the supplier and asked. Lethargy, depression, changes in water intake/urination, diarreah, vomiting. Except for vomiting, my dogs has been experiencing these for months. My vet even charged me 100$ for antibiotics. He said the blood test showed a very faint positive for Lyme's, despite the dog getting vaccinated, using frontline, and having never found a single tick on him last year. I am currently pursuing reimbursement from the pet food manufacturer for the vet bills. (And increasing my hatred for Chinese imports, the source of the Melamine).

I was so grateful my dog's food wasn't on any of the lists. When the second contaminant was found (the rice gluten) I called the company that makes my dog's food and my parents' dog's food. Thankfully neither buys from any outside suppliers. Both use ingredients that are completely USA grown. My mother complained about the price of her dog's food (Cannidae) but still bought it for her. She also made fun of me feeding my dog holistic organic hippie natural dog food. (Wellness). But we're both glad now. If I felt I couldn't trust any manufactured dog food, I'd cook my own. I've got some cookbooks that have recipes for dog food, not dog treats. I don't cook for myself but I'd cook for my dog. I hope your dog recovers and lives a long and healthy life. Just started (after the recalls) buying Wellness catfood for Jasper. Was buying IAMS prior to the recall. Fortunately he loves the new brand and is adjusting well. It does cost a little more, but it lasts longer, and it's worth it if it keeps him healthy.
I talked with the food Mfg. and they told me to have my vet take samples and send it to CA, to the only office that can test for the presence of Melamine (how many pets are affected for this one office to handle?). They will supposedly pay for this to be done. Now I have to see if my vet will do it and if he knows how to go about getting reimbursed from them. It just seems the Manufacturers are setting up roadblocks to hamper peoples ability to get answers. Make it enough of a hassle, and people will throw up their arms and forget about it. SOP. It's a shame, and it's probably not even their fault, except for using shady Chinese suppliers. I'm not really worried about the long term health of my dog so much, just angry they were using Chinese imorts for their "Made in the US" dog food.
