3-week New owner of a 2014 PiP base. After coming back from a 10 day vacation, we are locked out of the car. The Toyota care service guy told my wife that this would happen if inactive for 2-3 days, which does not make sense to me at all. Is there a FAQ about this? Or we need to park it differently? We do not have a mechanical key to back up, so this is really unsettling.

    Many thanks!

what? how did you get in the car? you have a metal key in the fob. you were locked out as in; the doors locked automatically, or, the battery died and the lock actuators don't work? the toyotacare person really told you that? are you pulling our legs???:p i left my pip for a month last winter, no issue at all.

there is no FAQ because there is no answer.

Is there not a mechanical key in side your fob? Should be if not see dealer.

When you buy a car like the Prius which has remote door openers, the seller has to provide you with a mechanical key, as well as a remote fob. I bought a Highlander hybrid a bit back, and didn't discover that the seller (a dealer) hadn't included the mechanical key until we inadvertently left the system on overnight in auxiliary mode and killed the battery. The dealer was able to provide a key given the VIN.

After some time interval (I don't recall what it is), the remote door opener electronics shuts down to preserve the (tiny) 12v auxiliary battery, requiring use of the key to open the door. That should "wake up" the system so the car can be started normally.

My FOB has a Mechanical key ..Just puch the button on the left side and out it pops ...back part of the key is the part that has the hole for a keychain And look at the door handle you'll see where to insert it...ans walaa the door opens
And also you may have inadvertently left the interior light on.. it happen to me and I killed the battery.. Read your manual on Keys and jump starting

Thanks. I will need to look at the FOB. I did not see a separate key and assumed there is no mechanical key.
I will check the interior light as well --wife was driving it.

I think we were all surprised the first time we saw a key inside our fob.

I remember the first night home after buying my PiP, I couldn't believe there were 38 pages dedicated to explaining how to open, close and lock the doors. My last car, with a standard fob, covered that in maybe 4 or 5 pages.

It's surprising about how detail they go into about the issues one can have with the lock/unlock process, and how to work around the problems.

Which is probably conveniently stored, for easy access, in the glove box, in the locked car.
