Greetings. I picked up a 2006 (yeah I know) but it was only 1000 so its whatever.

I knew the mfd wasnt working so its stuck on full ac. I already knew how to fix that.

Ride home the triangle came on with the park lock malfunction message.

I got home, reset it and it restarted and went back into park.

The 12v appears to be a newer advance battery. I'll pull it tomorrow and check the voltage.

Anything else? Mfd and error code not related or are they?

Which error code did you retrieved?

The 12v was brand new. Had it tested and load tested 12.5-12.6 which was only a hair off their brand new ones. They said its definately not the 12v.

I'll put it back in and see what happens. I could never get my mini vci software to work so I guess it may have to goto the dealer.

If the vehicle doesn't move, see if you can borrow a OBD2 reader for one of the chains (Pep boys, Autozone, Oreillys, Advanced, etc).

Each location within the same chain may offer a different reader, and if you're lucky one might be hybrid compatible.

What kind of issues were you having with the techstream install?

I have a regular scanner but it doesnt do the prius I dont think.

I drove the car all the way and took the battery out to get it tested.

The battery is still out now because I removed the mfd but couldn't find a replacement yet. I wanted to be able to use the diagnostic mode on the screen.

I got the mini vci a couple years ago and it came with a mini laptop disk and I didnt realize my laptop doesnt have a drive. None of the downloads I tried could get working without the passcode or something I dont know.

The only other thing I could find was maybe the transmission relay. If I can find a mfd I'll grab another relay and hopefully get lucky replacing everything at once.

Find a desktop computer with the old style CD reader with the drawer that slides out. These can read the mini CDs. Copy the contents of the CD to a USB stick or other format media your laptop can use.

That’s what I did. Don’t forget the other program you have to install also. A cracked tech stream won’t work without it.

Ok. So I found a mfd that was 47220 instead of 47210, the donor car has nav and mine didnt. I swapped them and they were both compatible minus the data feed plug.

Put the new battery back in and the park lock malfunction came back on again. No codes, not with the regular scanner anyways.

So I meant to grab another white relay but I didnt want to experiment taking one out for the first time since I'm not sure how its attached.

Anyone familiar with this? Nothing helpful on youtube in terms of a visual walkthrough.

To replace park lock mechanism, it is up high on the side of the transmission. On side closer to firewall. los easy to get to when trans is in the car. Really easy when it is out.

Pretty sure Luscious Garage has a video showing it out of the car so you get an idea of what it looks like.

Not a fun job. Use of swivel or jointed or wobble extensions can help. But still a drawn out process just to remove a few bolts.

    Good luck.

I was able to get a master relay from the same donor car as the mfd.

I got back and put the "new" one in. Did the beltloop around town and no lights.

Stopped at the grocery store and when I put it in park in came back on, so I put it back in gear and drove to toyota.

I pulled up to the service door, put it in park and it worked still. Turned the car off, back on and the light went off so I drove back.

Really strange but I'm guessing it was definately the relay and possibly something mechanical as well but as of right now it is working.

Ok. So the lights stayed off for 3 days. I drove about 3 hours away no problem.

On the way back the abs brake pump thing started buzzing every 30 seconds. Then the park lock malfunction came back on and the brake pump stopped excessive cycling.

The lights are the hazard triangle, vsc and exclamation circle.

Could it be the brake pump?

I really dont want to go back to Toyota after having already been run around by them before.

I went through the same maddening issue with an 05 w/250k miles. For me it ended up being an inadequate ground connection on the 12v battery. (Fingers crosses after 6 weeks of success.)

OK now that I’ve given away the ending I’ll provide the grisly details.

This car produced the symptoms on wet weather days. Car drove fine but threw the red triangle and ominous parking pawl message. Researched all over and suspects were 12v battery, fuses, fuse box connections and internal trans control module wiring (under glove box) and the park lock mechanism.

Changed 12v as it had bad numbers and was, as far as I could tell the original (13 yrs. !) seemed to help at first but symptoms reappeared. Visually Checked the fuses, fuse box and trans controller interior wiring. Did not check connections with multi meter. (Not so good at that but I’m trying to improve that part of my game.) Cleaned and added dielectric grease where appropriate. No luck. Didn’t really make sense to me anyway as those wires aren’t exposed to the weather and my problem occurred when the weather was wet. Seemed like the transmission control on the exterior was the likely culprit as it was out in the elements but I really didn’t want to mess wit that especially in my driveway during the winter.

I kept searching and tearing my hair out. Then I read a post on this site about water infiltration into the 12v battery compartment causing a ground fault and causing this problem. (Made sense to me - badly grounded 12v behaving like a weak 12v) so I decided to chase that possibility.

I did what I could to address the leak (top of hatch near roof line there are threads on this.). Then I redid the ground connections on the 12v carefully cleaning the connections and body surface and slathering with dielectric grease. I believe this is what solved the problem. Been good for about 6 weeks now driving through New England winter slop.

Sanding the paint off where that ground connection bolts to a good idea too. I'd like to add a better ground to a thicker part of the car than just the body.

    Codes are: C2301 and P3102.

I'll check the negative ground next. So far I have tested the battery and terminals, replaced the mfd, replaced master relay, checked p con circuit.

I'm guessing now either the wiring to the actuator or the actuator itself, which I can not find anywhere for less than twice the cost of a whole transmission.

Maxidas tablet. All those sub codes I guess would be useful other than they all read the exact same causes.

After extensive research I was able to narrow it down quite a bit.

No bad connections in trunk or related battery issues.

P con circuit under the hood is displaying proper voltages at all terminals and connections.

Checking the tcm connections all seemed to be displaying over 12v which was comparable to all connections in that area. However after reconnecting the tcm the first time the codes were cleared, after subsequent reconnections the codes stayed on.

I ordered a new used tcm for $14 on ebay. I also have access to a parts prius but wanted to get a verifiable correct part # and try both if necessary to rule it out.

That only leaves the actual shift actuator itself, so I will try to pull that one from the parts prius if possible. Hopefully all this will save a $1200 dollar visit to the dealer. As of so far I have spent under $100.

Easy to pull from a trans that is already out.
Not so fun to do it when the trans is still in the car.

I was saving it for last for that reason, time and money. I read in another thread it is accessible through the wheel well. So if I am able to get one out that way I should be able to get it back in, hopefully.

Installed the new tcm. No luck.

I crawled underneath to get to the actuator. 2 out of 3 bolts are fairly accessible. I was able to loosen those in no time.

The third bolt on the top is the beast. Its one inch from the steering column. I tried for a few minutes but the wrench kept falling.

I got a better angle with my left hand but no coordination since I am right handed.

I'll just have to keep practicing.
