I'm thinking about getting the Falken ZE-912 P195/60/14 on my 2001 Prius... What PSI should I be running the new tires at? Thanks!
This is one of the topics that I have spent a LOT of time looking at (Tire pressure and the best tire to put on as a replacement, winter traction vs. rolling resistance etc...) The general school of thought seems to be a 42/40 set-up. That's not to say that there are not extremes though. Seem to remember some in the 60's-70+ range. Personally I've gone from roughly the low 40's to low 50's for the last few weeks and am getting the best milage yet out of the car (58.5-59 for the last 500 miles). Not sure how much of that is better P&G and how much is the pressure... That's my two cents. And to add one more cent, depending on your traction/weather needs I would consider the Assurance Triple Treads. Excellent treadlife and all season traction while sacrificing the least on RR.
Since 175 width tires tend to show excessive shoulder wear using 35/33 psi inflation, the 195 width tires will probably show even more shoulder wear at that inflation level as a larger width tire is being installed on the same wheels (which would tend to push out the center of the tread even more). Hence I agree that 42/40 psi is a good place to start, assuming that the maximum inflation pressure printed on the sidewall is 44 psi or higher.
Mine are rated for 40psi max... Right now I have all 4 pumped up to 40. Should I do 40 front and 38 rear?
Agreed on shoulder wear. I had 195/60s on our 2001 (Goodrich Traction T/A) and the tires developed wear on the inside edges. I generally kept the inflation pretty reasonable, too, like 35 PSI. I think the car also took a mileage hit. I do think handling was improved, but if I were to do it over I'd look for a 185/60. I liked the Goodrich tires, but they're NLA. They have a successor, though, in the G-Force Super Sport. Tire Rack gives them high marks. General has also been making some decent tires lately. Check out the Altimax HP.
You could do 40/38 or you could stay at 40/40. If you don't notice any handling issues now, then it really doesn't matter.
