Got in the car to head to work the other day and when I turned it on I got a "Check Hybrid System" message. Couldn't shift into drive, but the engine runs. Eventually I used the Dr. Prius app to get a code P182-B, which AutoCodes tells me could mean any of the following:

    -Faulty Transmission Internal Mode Switch
-Transmission Internal Mode Switch harness is open or shorted
-Transmission Internal Mode Switch circuit poor electrical connection
    -Faulty Transmission Control Module (TCM)

Called an auto shop to try and get a better idea of what this repair might look like, and they said it could be anything from a simple fix to an entire transmission rebuild.

My understanding was that Prius transmissions almost never fail, so this is a bit surprising, however the car is a 2010 with almost 200k miles on it, so maybe it's just reaching the end of it's life? I'm wondering if it's worth trying to repair, as I suspect my hybrid battery is also going to need replacing sometime very soon. Anyone have experience with this or advice on repair? Thanks.

No not really but I have 362,000 on a generation 3 2010. Loaded car. The transmissions in these cars are pretty stout unless something may have been run with the wrong transmission fluid and done something to MotoGen one or two or whatever I don't really know I can't wait till the people that do come along and see what we got I don't even recognize this code but that may be because of the way it's being read but I can attest to the fact that these transmissions are pretty stout I pull a trailer with ours we've had no trouble with the transmission or the drive line of the vehicle The head gasket is now failing but the car is still running daily Amazon flex and what have you We are waiting for it to die and have a generation 2 to replace it sitting right here ready to go The generation 3 will not get fixed It's too flimsy of a vehicle to be fixing on door panels armrests everything is just kind of blown out.

The description of trouble code P182B for your Prius is Gear Lever X Position "B" Circuit Low.

    The problem could be:
    1. Wire harness or connector
    2. Shift lock control unit assembly
    3. Power management control ECU

The trouble code does not have anything to do with the transmission.

See the attached PDF for troubleshooting steps.
