P&G makes sense in backups?

I generally think of P&G as a hardcore-mileage maneuver that takes place on back roads. The other day, I got in the usual traffic jam on the way home and the battery went from full to 2 bars and I thought that the engine would come on to charge the battery anyhow, so I should make sure to accelerate with engine, then glide... and I guess I ended up P&G'ing.

I left the traffic jam 10 minutes later with a half-full battery and increased MPG (trying to work the week's MPG back up from a trip my wife took). It really wasn't annoying to those behind me, as far as I can tell, and seemed to fit right in with backup traffic patterns.

    Does this make sense?

I'm not sure I understand the situation. Can you clarify what you were doing? Do you mean that when traffic moved you would accellerate for a bit, then just glide until you caught up with the stopped traffic? Or was the traffic moving all along, but slowly so you just pulsed and glided in the gap b/w you and the car in front?
