Mississauga, Ontario - Daimler Buses North America has received orders for 1,052 Orion VII Next Generation diesel-electric hybrid transit buses, including 202 from the City of Ottawa.

MTA New York City has ordered 850 buses, along with the order from OC Transpo in Ottawa. The buses will be powered by BAE System's Hybri-Drive diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system. The Ottawa buses will be delivered by 2009 and will make OC Transpo the third-largest hybrid bus fleet in Canada. The New York buses, which will be delivered through 2010, will bring the MTA's diesel-electric hybrid bus fleet to almost 1,700 units, making it the largest such fleet in the world. With this order, Orion transit buses will account for almost 50 per cent of the MTA New York City Transit's entire fleet.

"Daimler focuses on shaping the future of transportation through initiatives for greater fuel economy and lower emissions in commercial vehicles," said Andreas Renschler, Head of Daimler Trucks Division. "In North America, where public-private partnerships create the right conditions, hybrid buses have proven to be an ideal solution for modern urban city transportation. With the orders announced today, we have again proven our leadership and responsibility in this field."

Compared to standard diesel propulsions, these hybrid buses deliver up to 30 per cent better fuel economy, with 90 per cent less particulate matter, 40 per cent less NOx and 30 per cent fewer greenhouse gases.

I'm glad to see my city is being progressive on incorporating fuel-efficient public transportation vehicles to its fleet. Goodness knows we had some of the worst diesel buses on the road for a while, some dating back to the '50s and '60s until recently.

wow and I thought we were bad. I swear the only reason why we have new diesel (and the electric trolley) busses is because of the Olympics. Our current busses were from Expo '86 and the ones before 1986 were from the 50s!
