I'm sorry if I'm being a n00b, but is there any problem with running with my airbox open?! The sound is just so cool when it's open and you give it gas I love it!

I don't know what an AEM filter is. But no, you probably cannot put it in your Prius. There's a custom filter with custom gasket that's necessary.

Some of us use K&N filters and have modified an old gasket to make the K&N for the old Prius ('01-'03) fit.

You may end up with some dirt and leaves, etc in the box and that in turn may limit airflow through the fliter. I find it strange that the car will even run without it; my Porsches would not. I assume/hope that you are leaving the filter in place; if not, you are REALLY asking for a lot of problems, even if you drive in a very clean environment.

Have you looked in to a high-flow filter like K&N? If you use one, make sure you modify the sealing gasket on the right side, as in this website:

    http://www.vfaq.net/mods/AirFilter.html

Of course, all of this MAY void your warranty, I do not know.

Leaving the lid off the air box will bypass the airfilter. With all the leaves, grit, and bugs I've seen in the filter, I doubt anyone would that getting into the engine.

As too the AEM filter, adding that will require modification. Which will likely cause an issue with the emission warranty at least.
Also, the after market cone filters and cold air induction intakes are generally aren't certified for street use. This is because of emissions. I think it's more of a lack of williness to test the parts for certificaton than them actually having a major effect.

The K&N FIPK gen2 is CARB certified, but they are made for specific models and engines. Of course not for the Prius. Which is a shame since it seemed to help out my Ranger's FE.

I think it is OK to run with the air box open on a 2006 Package 9. Everything will sound better, though, if the car is lowered into higher gravity.

Thanks. I should ahve clarified. On cars I've done this to in the past, the hole was under the filter so you could do this. After looking under the hood, I can see this will not work. Can't I just take some PVC and stick the AEM filter on that then stick the PVC int he intake hoel?!??! I don't care about the warranty stuff cause if it really needs to go to the dealer then I'll just put it back to stock so they can't tell.

 Sounds like an incredibly DUMB idea to me... unfiltered air straight thru to the cylinders. Couldn't be healthy for the ICE. Sounds as if it could introduce fine dust into the cylinders = mixes with lubricating oil = fine scratches on the cylinder walls.

Then.... there's no *RULE* requiring using good sense.

Call me old school or whatever, but I have yet to hear ANY 4 cylinder (or even a 6 cylinder) engine ever sound good, intake or exhaust for that matter. The sound of a fart can Chock Full 'O Nuts coffee can muffler is worse than nails on a blackboard to me. Can't even imagine the gasping intake sound of the Prius.

Now if the Prius had a 427 V-8, well then we could entertain some performance mods...
