Okay to Charge 12V battery via front access?

    When the 12V “starter” battery needs to be jumped, that can happen via the front (fuse box under hood + ground/bolt). Can a battery charger be used the same way to charge that 12V battery? (Accessing the 12V via the back of the car is a tiresome hassle.)

    Yes. With our low-usage 2010 I've got the 12 volt pretty much constantly* on a charger, hooked up with a quick-connect harness (came with the charger), wired into the 12 volt positive lead going into under-hood fuse box.

    * Ok to do with a smart charger: it'll go through a series of charging steps, then settle back to just a trickle charge.

    Yes you can but that's a weak point to be putting your charge leads It may kick your charger fan on and up the amps to the next ramp up state your charger has of course if you're using a trickle charger you're just going to be none of that but it's not ideal to connect up there You're basically clipping to a piece of tin foil now if you got small enough clips and you can grab right onto that stud and that silver nut that's what you'd want to be doing A lot of times the cables that come with the charger don't do so well like that clipping directly on the little nut what you could do is mount your power sports two prong battery tender plug right there on that nut and a good ground so you could just plug up whatever charger you have usually a trickle type setup or battery maintainer so you won't be doing anything quickly I have like it 10 amp charger with that type of plug on it which will charge the battery actually quite quickly unless it's completely flat.

    It is OK to charge there but only use a charger which does not go above 4A.

    I know this may seem counterintuitive, but turn on the headlights for 30s or so first if there is a possibility of surface charge on the battery. That is, if it has been driven (or charged) in the last few hours. I recently ran into a charger (HF's 63350 Viking brand) which misbehaved when it started up attached to a battery like that. Thinking back, a Battery Tender Jr. also had problems and did not charge the battery properly in the car, and it might have been due to the same factor. If the battery has sat overnight it should be fine and you can skip the headlight step. (It isn't entirely illogical that a charger would do the wrong thing when it sees surface charge. The battery could be well over 13V and the charger might just assume it is bad or already fully charged, as that is way past 100% SOC on an AGM. I doubt most chargers have a mechanism for draining charge out of a battery to fix the situation themselves.)
