In taking apart another portion of my car, which has been turning into a hobby lately, I discovered this just in front of the passenger's front tire, behind the wheel well.

It's a plastic (I know, hard to believe on a Prius) container. It's not the coolant reservoir. The air intake under the hood dumps air into into this.

All my points go to the best (not necessarily correct) answer! Although, it would be nice to know what it does....

PS Don't think about it too hard 'because I only have a few points to give you! :)

Yes Frank is right, an induction silencer. Toyota calls it a resonator.

I guess this begs the question: what would the car sound like without it? Does it effect fuel economy? Usually anything upstream of an ICE's intake reduces efficiency and power potential.

This device really smacks of the self serving rational that absolves the automotive design business of any reality. It makes me desist any further pretentious terminology or inculpating syntaxial descriptions.

I actually read about a doctor a number of years ago that actually used a condom-catheter to extend his distance driving range in the US... Basically the Mtn. Dew went in the mouth, and after "processing" could be "purged on the fly" via the catheter and a bit of tubing out the door :p

    Them zany doctors :p

A quick Google search turned up a page that provides instructions to Mustang owners on how to remove this part from their car. It is regarded as a no-cost performance enhancement.

the induction tract makes almost as much noise as the exhaust when under full load. Had a big block Chev on the dyno and at full power it was almost unbearable. My ears rang for a week after that setup was done. Ford has tuned the resonator on the new pickup to what the customer thinks is what a truck should sound like and I'm sure on the Prius it's there to stop the pulsing stacato bark that 4 cylinders make under load. Full throttle sound levels for the Prius is less than 78dba. Pretty quiet. As for robbing horse power I doubt that it makes much if any difference. It's no 5 liter Mustang.

Thanks for the quick responses, guys.

True enough, the maybe 1hp that might be gained on an engine this small isn't much for power, but if it got 1mpg better economy, there's a trade-off to weigh on noise vs. gas. Hmm...

Bobc, since you're taken with taking apart your car, any interest in experimenting for the good of the Prius community? :)
