my 2005 prius has a residue of dirty oil on the narrow panel
just below the driver's door. none on the panel between that and the wheel.

is it coming from the door?

Are you the original owner? Could it be from some kind of rust proofing that was previously applied to the inside of the door?

Are you referring to the door sill? That is the lower part of the door opening on the body. Open your door and look in between the door seal and the outer bottom edge, you should see a couple of drain holes? Does the area where the drain holes are approxamitly correlate to where you saw the oily fluid residue on the door sill? If so I second the fact that it could be some kinda corrosion inhibitor.

ok, i took a closer look and discovered the small panel between the wheel and the door sill panel are not flush, as on the other side of the car. the forward panel projects outward about 1/8th inch, so oil and debris are likely flying up from the road through that gap.

    thanks everyone.

So I have some sort of black oily liquid on the passenger door sill. It's right below one of the drain holes. I am the original owner and don't believe I had any corrosion stuff done extra when I bought the car. The window and mirrors work. Should I be taking it to the dealer - before I try to wipe it away (it gets all over everyone's legs and my white pants...). Thx for any help.

Your car is 6-7 years old and no longer under warranty. It would make sense for you to wash the car and see if that liquid comes back - before you pay $100 for the dealer tech to look at the car.

So I checked this morning to see what was happening under the passenger side door. There is a continuing leak of something. It looks like it could be oil - it's light, orangy-brown that turns black after it's leaked out for while. It's definitely coming from the middle hole to the interior of the door - so I guess I'm off to the dealer unless there are any other ideas. Thank you!
