I have an 02' Prius with 200K miles and the oil smells like gas. I first noticed this at ~180K and have changed the oil several times since then to no effect. I've also run injector cleaner, changed PCV, and spark plugs in the last 30K miles. The efficiency is still alright (ballpark 40mpg) and it runs fine, which makes me worry it could be the motor itself. Anyone have ideas or thoughts? I thought it could be a faulty injector but no codes and the mileage seems fine.
If one is dripping a little bit that's enough to make your oil smell like fuel more than normal but probably not enough to really hurt anything regular oil changes so there could always be that going on 200k I usually just put on some remanufactured injectors when things start acting up that could be feel related I mean they are old and been on there a while and there's not really much to it getting some factory units that have been calibrated and retested and set up as a place right up the street from me that does it for diesel trucks and all kinds of things so it's a service that's pretty normal it seems like but then again some people have had it done and then noticed nothing but if one is dripping and now it isn't that should make a difference.
Looks like injectors are an easy enough job so I'll give some remans a try with another oil change to see if that resolves it. Will update post facto...
If you don't mind me askin, when was your 02's last dealer service? I'll assume your're currently doin the oil changes. Have you ever done an oil change a week or two after the one you just did? It may seem wasteful to do 2 oil changes so close to each other, but since you're worried about it, at least you should be able to see / smell the difference and get an idea or two about how bad the issue is. Just remembering finding out about dealers using recycled oil. When I found out I was like -hummm, I wonder what the viscosity of recycled oil is? I was pretty sure it wasn't - 0w 20 like my old honda hybrid took. @Tombukt2 thanks for the heads up on the wipers in another thread. I got a pair from your link and they are way easier to install than OEM, even if the rubber squeeked a bit the first few passes. But the squeeking could have been from how cold it is here. I had to wait a week for it to warm up enough, seein how the little wiper usually takes me a half hour to get the angle right before it slides into the arm.
I do the oil myself every few thousand miles, but yeah I'll do a flush with the injectors and see if it comes back.
