Oil Overfill

    To those of us who are concerned regarding too much oil in the crankcase I submit the following simple solution. Useing a small [1/2 pint] glass jar, drill two 1/4 inch holes in the tight fitting lid. Insert a 3 foot length of 1/4 inch O.D. plastic tubing in one hole and a 1 foot length one inch into the second hole. Seal the holes around the tubes with silicon cement. Insert the longer tube into the crankcase through the dip stick hole and suck on the other tube until sufficient oil is oil is decanted into the jar. Easy to make and works a treat.

    Good idea! I was using a syringe with a 3 way stopcock. Suck it out, Push into the jug.

    hehehe... My MityVac came with a small version of this for brake bleeding. I recently purchased the big version to make life simpler for changing oil in lawnmowers and such. It has a vacuum pump on the side so I don't have to suck on it and holds 8L of fluid.

    Be carefull sticking tubes into the dipstick hole. My first try ended up catching the tubing on the end of the dipstick holder, which dug into the tubing getting it stuck in there. I nearly had to drop the oil pan to get it out. Thankfully pushing it in a little and twisting it before trying to slowly pull it back out managed to get the job done.

    If I ever take the pan off I'm going to put a flare tool on that dipstick holder so that won't ever happen again.

    I like the idea of flaring the tube. I just need an excuse to take the oil pan off ...
