Installing an engine block heater last night we noticed a small oil leak from a black plastic cap on the bottom of the engine, passenger side, near the oil pan... my brother though it might be a cartridge type oil filter. It looks like oil is dripping from there. not much but with a new car a single drop is one too much IMO.

So... knowing nothing yet (it only has 300 miles) is that the oil filter and is this a minor problem or would it need an oil change to re-seat the gasket...? Seems like an odd place to put the oil filter to me having to remove that plastic shield with 2 dozen plastic clips every time.

Yup, that sounds like the filter. Take it in and let the dealer look at it.

Sounds like the filter cap all right. Yours may just be loose but I agree with Spiderman, let the dealer fix it. FYI it uses an O ring type gasket that is supplied with the filter.
