Bought a 2013 Prius v from dealer. Car has 4000 miles on it and has been certified by dealer. I called the service manager who said to wait either 5 months or till the car has 10,000 miles for servicing. This car will likely not have anything like 10,000 miles on it in 5 months. Should the oil be changed anyway, or is it ok to wait till it has 10,000 miles?

The oil change interval is 10,000 miles or twelve months, whichever comes first. If your 2013 hasn't had its first oil change, it's past due.

I think what he was saying was wait until 5 months and then change the oil if you want, unless you get to 10k first.

However most would wait for 10k. Assuming you got Toyota Care, it only covers two changes for free in the first 25k, which means two changes at 10k between changes.

The car is a year old, you don't know its oil change history. Ask the dealer specifically if the oil has been changed per the Toyota records. If it has, then wait till 1 year from that date. If it hasn't, change now because the car is more than 1 year old.

Some of us do a 5k interval. Read the definition of severe service in the owner's manual and see if you need to use 5k or 1 year as the conditions the car is driven can influence the needed change interval.

For the true geek, there are oil analysis services that will analyze the condition of your oil and tell you via a commentary and about 25 parameters how it is functioning.

Or two changes in the first two years, whichever comes first. As a 2013 it must be due (or past due) for its second oil change.

My car is three years old and the clock hasn't hit 14k. I've had six oil changes.; four by the dealer and twice by me.

Oil changes are cheap, and I recycle the oil.

With my 2011 Prius 2 the manual states if you use synthetic oil change it after 10,000. With regular type oil change in 5,000 miles. A left over from the computer programmer on older cars it will state you must change oil at 5,000 miles even though you have synthetic oil The manual tells you how to delete this message at 5,000 miles when you see it.

Most of Toyota's maintenance intervals are miles (or kms) OR months, whichever comes first.

If you're itching to do an oil change there's a few outs you can use to justify it. First off, coming from previous owner makes for some uncertainty. Then there's the aforementioned severe service interval.

And if you are North of the 49th parallel, 5000 mile or 6 months is the REGULAR interval. The justification about our severe cold weather is questionable; this is a local ski hill yesterday:
