    Hey All,
Brought my 2006 Prius and my wife's 2006 Chevy Malibu to a independent to change the oil. Of course, they overfilled on both despite my specific instructions ("only 3.5qt in the prius, please"). However, they did redo the job.

But one of the techs told me that during the first 1000 miles after an oil change, "one quart of oil will burn off," and that 1/2 quart overfill is ok, but one whole quart over is too much. Is this remotely true?

BTW, for both cars, the oil is now at the max fill line.

    Thanks!
    Andrew

I'd be finding someone else to do my oil changes if they fed me lies like that. Oil burn off during first 1k miles isn't normal and doesnt occur. Most oil consumption, if any, occurs later on in the OCI. Overfill is *never* acceptable. In fact, your're better off being slightly under the Full mark. It just amazes me the false information some other techs give out. Gives us honest guys a bad name.

    Ditto josh.

Increase your chances of success by buying *three* quarts of oil yourself and handing them to the tech. Three is plenty. In any case, always check the oil level yourself before driving away from every oil change.

God no, how could someone say that with a straight face?

If you are using 1 qt / 1000 mi, you have a serious engine problem.*

    * Unless its a VW or certain GM products, then it is within spec.

thanks for the advice, everybody! fyi, the prius' oil was about 1/2 inch overfilled, the malibu was about 1/3 inch overfilled.

    won't be going back there.

the knowledge sloshing about priuschat is amazing :)
