Oh No our Prius Broke!

    My son had to go to a store and buy a tail light bulb for the 2008 Prius. It has just over 190,000 miles on it, still has the original brakes, but it's had it's first failure. A bulb.

    I was surprised to learn the tail lights weren't LED.

    When I say first failure I'm not kidding. Other things like oil filters, oil, cabin filters, and tires I consider consumables. But this car that we bought new in 2008, then gave to our son in 2015, has not had so much as a loose screw all these years and miles. Reliability to the MAX.

    Great story. If you buy new, take care of it, and keep a vehicle for over 10 years, experiences can certainly be good. Even our ‘97 Ford Escort was very reliable for the 13 years we owned it. Except for consumables, the only repairs we had was 1 tie rod end and a $20 solenoid for the charcoal canister (emissions).

    At least they don’t have to be replaced under normal circumstances. Look at the cabs, I’ve only seen one (out of all the Prius cabs) that had a few blown LED bulbs on the left taillight.


    As a side note, I still have my original high beam bulbs even though they’re used as DRLs in Canada so if anyone tells you they won’t use DRLs on a Gen 3 because it shortens the lifespan, I call bs.

    Also, all my door locks work even though I mostly used global unlock for the SKS (so all doors lock and unlock every time I get into the car and exit the car). Again, they’ve been very reliable. (this was another concern brought up on PC about wear & tear on the door locks).

    It’s possible I lucked out on both the bulbs and the locks but so far, the Prius has been very reliable.

    Yeah our high beams are still original. They've got a bit of a "tan", on the top hemisphere of the bulbs. Too: the high beams are comparitively easy to replace if it comes to that. We've got (3rd gen) LED low beams, just hope they last.

    I got out of the habit of locking the car in our garage, thinking it might reduce wear and tear.

    Same. Ours has a tan too ;).

    My low beams are halogens so they have been replaced once. “Replaced” since I had HIDs before and put the stock bulbs back when the HID capsules wore out.
