Odd piece of plastic in my glove compartment

I believe you have found the shelf that is supposed to go in there. Look closely inside the compartment and you should see pieces of plastic (possible molded to the sides--I can't remember off the top of my head) that the shelf either sits on or slides into.

 

Yes, it's a shelf. You can use it, or leave it out as you see fit.

Yes, it does connect to something. It connects to the sides of the "top" glove box (there should be grooves in the sides). That turns the "top" glove box into a two-level. I keep my auto expense book in the upper portion.

When I was driving home from the dealer, I hear an annoying clicking sound that came from the glove box. The shelf was there, but hadn't being installed correctly on one side (it was lying on top of the slot).

EDIT: Heh, you walk away from the keyboard for a minute and see how many replies there are.

 

So has anyone figured out what to put in/on the shelves? I would imagine maps, but then wouldn't they go in the map pockets? And how about the center console & hidden drawer? I've only ever had a glove box before, so I've been trying to figure out how I'm supposed to use these nifty little hiding spots. And what about that area in the front of the center console under the armrest? There is some sort of slot that seems made to hold something, but I don't know what?

At least the salesman did show me the slot in the back of the bottom glove box for the manual. I would never have figured that out by myself. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

I've been keeping a log of my auto expenses ever since I've owned a car. I keep it, with a pen, in the uppermost self. Other pieces of paper I would like to have (the channels of the XM radio, for example) goes right beneath that.

valet cards, not that they'd ever see the hands of a valet...

its a shelf. its very handy too. if you have trouble installing it, just drop by your Authorized Toyota Dealer and they will put it in for you very quickly.

 

The fit may have been improved since 2004, but mine would come loose. It was fixed by putting a layer of electrical tape into the grooves on the shelf and then sliding it into place.

What do you mean by the "hidden drawer"?? I thought I found all the secret spots! Seems like you mentioned all the containers I knew about, except for that "hidden drawer". Do you mean the one below the CD/radio tuners? The one that opens like a jaw? There's a pack of gum in mine in that area, plus a pen and sticky note pad for tracking mileage and MPG for every gas station stop.

The only real "drawer" i can think of, where you pull a thing out, is the one under the center console (where females can put their ::ahem:: stuff for emergencies... :blink: TMI? sorry lol). Someone once mentioned on another thread that that's where they hide their "stash", whatever that means . Others put their maps in there instead. Just some ideas for you.

On the little top shelf, I put travel size instant hand sanitizer and travel moisturizer. It's probably good that you don't have that much in your storage spaces b/c it'll keep your overall carrying weight down -- you know how we Prius drivers are obsessed about maximizing MPG! *SMUG ALERT* B)

 

I dont' have a shelf in my upper glovebox...

It does contain parking vouchers, a bird-book, my car pass for work and some screen wipes.

Centre console - sweets, phone charger, CDs, de-misting pad
Under centre console - sunglasses (out of sight of thieves)
Lower glovebox - locking wheelnut key, manual and not much else

I do have an annoying rattle coming from the glovebox area though - dismantled it and the surrounding heater vents, but found nothing..

The "hidden drawer" is the one in the center console. It's called the "hidden drawer" as it's generally the last one found. I keep my portable XM radio there (unless it's in use).

I keep my mileage log and XM radio information in the upper glove box. General Prius information, menus, chop sticks, iPod and the like go in the lower glove box. Center console has stuff for work, casino cards, audio stuff, MFD cleaner, tire gauge and tools. The manuals go in the pouch behind the passenger. The door panels hold a book on my side (current reading material) and my wife puts anything she wants on the passengers side. The drawer under the radio holds the remote for the XM radio, my name tag for church, a Swedish Christmas Goat and the button to operate the BT override.

 

I keep my micro-fiber cloth for the MFD on that shelf. Gas receipts go on the shelf in the center storage box. I use one of the cup holders for quarters since a have to do meter parking at one of my jobs, and my water bottle is too big for the cup holder. I still don't have a use for the "hidden" drawer. Maybe I'll put my weed in there

 

I had the same question about the plastic bit, figured it out last night.

I am very happy having all these storage compartments. My last car's compartmentalized interior storage really came down to two large compartments in the door bottoms, which rapidly became a mess of stuff piled in helter-skelter. With the Prius, I have all the little bits and pieces stuff that I like to have in the vehicle all the time neatly stored and easily findable, and there's nothing on the seats or in view when the car is parked. That's a plus to me.

I keep a little plastic basket on the top shelf, which contains a cleaning kit for the MFD - one of those LCD cleaners made for notebook computers. In the lower box I have the Prius manual, a tire gauge, and a swiffer for getting the dust off of all that black plastic.

I had the same thought at first..What is this little piece of plastic..I happened to see the slots and tried it out..Not very tight..I put pad and pens and tire gauge on the top shelf.. tissues and microfiber cloth under the shelf..In the lower compartment, car manual, receipts, and workout gloves...In the middle console coins in a smaller change organizer, head phones for working out, bluetooth ear piece for cell phone and extra pieces to the Belkin cell phone holder (it fits in one of the cup holders) and garage door opener...under the radio breath mints, hand sanitizer and contact lens solution..

BTW I also found two rubber plugs in the glove box that were not installed under the car...Thanks to PC, I knew where they were to be installed and easily accomplished it...
