OBD2 EU protocol rpius 2004 and UP

    i want to buy the elmscan 5 usb
    but here in the EU there are several protocols

    -J1850 PWM
    -J1850 VPW
    -ISO9141/14230
    -ISO15765 (CAN)
    -ISO14230-4 (KWP2000)
    -ISO9141-2

    what protocol is for the prius? 2004 model and UP ( i got 2005 )

    the elmscan 5 usb got the ISO14230-4 (KWP2000) and ISO9141-2 protocols

    An OBD-II compliant vehicle can use any of the five communication protocols: J1850 PWM, J1850 VPW, ISO9141-2, ISO14230-4 (also known as Keyword Protocol 2000), and more recently, ISO15765-4/SAE J2480 (a "flavor" of CAN). US car manufacturers were not allowed to use CAN until model year 2003, and as of this writing (June 2005) ScanTool.net, LLC is working on a CAN-compatible interface.

    stil working? so there is no elmscan that can use the canbus of the prius?

    so is can and iso-9141 2 different things or the same?

    VPW (Variable Pulse Width) was originally introduced by General Motors when PWM (Pulse With Modulation) belongs to Ford. ISO 9141 and the later incarnation ISO 14230 (AKA Keyword 2000) is the one most of European and Asian vehicles using. All new model starting 2006/2007 have only CAN protocol.     i got the more expensive model that also supports the canbus 11bit ISO15765 protocol

    i got the rs232 version for more solid connection and if needed i can always go from rs232 to usb with a adapter.

    the model i got now is the
    ELMScan 5 Scan Tool - OBD-2/EOBD Diagnose-Interface (RS232)

    including software and rs232 and obd2 cable!​

    Prius Mini-Scanner Questions and Answers
    Will the Mini-Scanner Work with the 2004 Model Year Prius? Unfortunately, no. Toyota have changed the way that their scanner gets at diagnostic information in the 2004 car. Information mandated by law is (presumably) still available on the ISO 9141-2 bus, but all of the interesting stuff has been removed and is now accessed using a CAN (Controller Area Network) bus.
