I was just wondering if anyone can recommend an obd code reader for the Prius. I would like one that would plug into my windows laptop computer. Ideally less than $100. I saw this one one ebay.... would it work? I just want to be able to see any trouble codes that come up, and clear them if necessary.eBay Motors: OBD II ELM327 USB Tool Interface Scanner CAN-BUS V 1.2a (item 260276278817 end time Aug-20-08 15:54:10 PDT) thanks alot, -Peter B
Hi Peter, I personally would be hesitant to place an eBay order to a vendor outside the US. I don't think you'll have much recourse if the product does not meet expectations. Why not buy an OBD-II code reader from your local auto parts store (one which is speced to be compliant with Toyota CAN)? Then you will have some recourse if the code reader is not compatible with your vehicle. Once you have the code reader in hand, you can force a few fault codes (for example, removing the traction battery interlock switch, disconnecting a fuel injector wiring harness connector, etc.) and see what happens.
Yeah, that looks pretty interesting. Obviously ScanGuage can read and clear trouble codes and display gauges, much like this one can. But it has its own screen, and doesn't connect to a laptop, AFAIK. And on your pre-2006 Prius you can use CAN-view, which connects to your MFD. Both of those are over your price limit however. This should do what you want it to do, hopefully for a good price when the auction is over. Spec sheet on hardware: http://www.elmelectronics.com/DSheets/ELM327DS.pdf
