On the way to work this morning, I heard a supporter blurb on NPR that mentioned Chevy and the research that they are doing on the Volt.

In light of other posts about the subject that have appeared recently, I thought to myself, "Interesting. So GM/Chevy are on a PR campaign." It would be really nice if they delivered something other than a "we're doing something about the environment, feel good about us, and feel good about buying our products" campaign for a car that is years away from hitting the streets. ;)

It's sort of an odd situation when considering GM. Bob Lutz, the guy who runs the show for Volt development will both sing the praises of electric cars and criticize increased CAFE standards in the same breath.

GM's electric car is a welcome departure from their gas-guzzling lineup and I really hope the program is a roaring success so that it brings their focus further away from trucks and SUVs, but GM has a ways to go before becoming "green" and reducing our dependence on oil.

While again it may never happen but I would be quite interested in the Volt.

GM did let slip where the Volt will be built in negotiations with the UAW. Lordstown is were they will make it, starting in 2009 for MY2010. Very interesting.

Well Lordstown isn't very far from me. Currently the Lordstown plant builds both the Chevy Cobalt and the Pontiac version G5, formerly the Cavalier and Sunfire. It has been rumored that the plant was possibly closing after they stop production of both models after the 2009 model year. But the big news with the new UAW contracts is that they promised to invest in the facility so it would make sense.
