Featured Novel idea from the Hyundai Ioniq

    Novel idea. Wish our Prii had this feature:

    "If you should accidentally leave a light on or something plugged in and the battery gets drained, there's no need for a jump-start. Just push a button on the dash and the car's big onboard battery pack will quick charge the 12-volt portion of the battery. No more calling AAA for a jump or dragging out jumper cables and hoping for a kind Samaritan to help you, and no replacing the heavy 12-volt battery every couple of years." - from cars.com website

    Prius already covers this. The headlights have an auto-off feature and power to the 12-volt outlets is shutoff when the vehicle is powered down. What else is needed?

    My 3Gen Prius does not have auto-off cabin/interior lights.

    That feature is on both ceiling lights for those on the United States. I'm surprised your distribution doesn't include that.

    that ionic feature is really cool.(y) hopefully, the larger gen 4 battery solves the prius problem.

    if you read the 12v threads here on priuschat, you'll find the problem in search of the solution.

    It is likely more for dissuading customer fears over not having a traditional 12 volt starter battery.

    You're missing the point lol. This is a feature if you did drain the battery for whatever reason. It makes sense - you have a giant battery, why not use it to jump the 12V (Although I thought the Ioniq eschewed the 12V?)

    I prefer prevention, rather than building a better bandaid. It's what we do.

    It's like burning gas cleaner rather than coming up with a better catalytic-converter.

    IMHO, the whole 12V issue in prius was a bad design in the first place. the lamps in trunk and doors don't turn off and they are not energy efficient LEDs either. i take care not to discharge 12V (my battery is 7 year old and still good), but I can see how a lot people can accidentally do it. furthermore, prius doesn't monitor the health of 12V battery and a lot of people are surprised by sudden failure to start condition, while they would be alerted by slow cranking in regular ICE car. Hyundai folks know that they have to do better than toyota to reach the #1 spot and they are doing it quickly.

    They did drop the 12volt for the North American market. Instead, they use a subsection of the traction pack for starting purposes. There is likely some level of disconnect between the sections for safety while the car is off; it is the same reason other hybrids and plug ins disconnect the traction pack, and use a 12volt for reconnecting and boot up.

    Batteries and people still die with even the best prevention. Then the prevention may not be the best. Gen2s had a manual switch for the SKS, because that system can drain the 12volt. There was an issue with dying Auris hybrid 12volts only a few years ago.

    Does Hyundai have a history of 12 volts dying regularly in its cars? Auto off headlights and accessory outlet cut offs is now the norm in many, if not all, cars. So are battery protection circuits for the starter battery. This Ioniq feature is most likely an in addition too, as oppose to instead of, the preventive features that are virtually standard across the board.

    It's burning the gas cleaner, and adding emission controls to reduce evaporative emissions while the car is parked.

    I could be wrong, but my understanding is that the Ioniq Hybrid does have an electrically separate 12 volt Lithium-ion battery that is physically co-located with the larger pack. I believe it is not simply a subsection of the larger pack used during initial startup. I believe the 12v section can be independently replaced if it ever fails.

    Like the larger battery, it is apparently warranted for the life of the car for original owners so there is no concern about an expensive battery failing even after many years and miles. I have not read the fine print on that warranty but that is how it is described. I'm sure the potential need to replace the batteries after warranty expiration is somewhat of a concern for Prius owners so this is a significant feature of the Ioniq.

    My Prius (2010, Canadian) didn't prevent so good: escorting a swarm of grandkids outa the car, I got distracted, managed to leave one door ajar for about 18 hours. Even with the dome light shut right off, ended up with a dead-dead-dead 12 volt battery. Whatever strategies Toyota's using, they don't work that well.

    Without an actual diagram of the pack, we are likely limited in understanding by what reporters write. Having the 12 volt section be separately serviced makes sense in the event of needed replacement, but also for manufacturer. The Ioniq and Niro use a traditional 12v battery in Europe and Asia, so a separate 12v Li-ion pack likely works out better than different traction packs for the different markets.
