Non curt hitch for the PIP

I've been using a Curt hitch on my PIP for over a year now, on a number of long trips carrying bikes. It's worked great.

I recommend getting that and have no idea what the heck could be the issue with the other brands.

 

I looked under the PiP the other day to see how the hidden hitch would fit after watching a video.
I can't say for sure if this is the reason or if the hidden hitch will absolutely NOT fit.
But the undercarriage panels on the drivers side where the hitch attaches to the tiedown ring mount
look like the undercarriage panels may hang too low to allow the hidden hitch to mate to the mount point.
The curt looks like it's vertical mount bars are longer then the hidden hitches vertical mount bars are.

If someone could measure the length of those bars we'd have a better idea.

 

Did you look under your car on the drivers side where the hitch attaches?
It's way up there with a 4 inch long 2 inch wide hole in the belly panel.
The hitch attaches to the frame where the tow ring is bolted to the frame on the drivers side.

 

Guess you'd have to guess just like me.

 

The hidden hitch that came off my 2006 gen 2 prius is too short (lengthwise) to reach from frame to frame on my 2010 gen 3. I held the old gen 2 hitch up against 2010 underside and it just WOULD NOT WORK. I ordered another specifically for the 2010, 2011.

 

anyone pulling a trailer on ev only?

 

On my recent Tesla test drive the rep said he knows of a few people that put a hitch on a Model S. He of course had to follow that up with, "we don't recommend you tow with a Tesla."

 

i understand the disclaimer, because there is towing, and there is TOWING. i'm thinking a lightweight utility trailer, to take to the dump, so i can get rid of my truck. is it more work than having another 600 lbs of people in the car?

 

You wouldn't think so...physics-wise at least

 

Thanks Slonis888, I'd taken a look at the connection points under my vehicle and was guessing that the length of the hidden hitches attachment brackets were not long enough for the crossmember to clear the under panels around the tow hook on the 14 PiP. Next time I get a chance I'll measure the width also.

bisco - Yes, towing in ev, but only in the winter.

 

I've towed a lot in ev mode and in hv mode. Have a hidden hitch. Have 3 rail motorcycle trailer that I tow a small motorcycle and the three rail trailer converts to a box trailer with a plywood conversion. Car towed great. On a recent 200 mile trip with about 500 lbs I averaged 44 mpg. No need for a pick up truck for me. I don't tow anything heavy just bulky.

 

I towed an 1800 lb load of soil on a lightweight 4x8 HF trailer a few days ago. Went to the yard in EV mode, but switched to HV mode when loaded down just so I didn't hold traffic up too much. Once up to speed, I switched back to EV. I should have taken note of the trip MPG, but it was likely 80 or so considering minimal use of gas.
