I just had a set of Nokian WR G2 tires installed and have to say that my initial impression is very positive! Compared to the Goodyear Assurance TriplTreds that they replace, steering seems much easier, they feel much lighter, seem to be quieter and handle very well on dry roads. I can't wait to find out how they do on snow and ice. I've already noticed an increase in mileage compared to the previous tires, but, again, time will tell.

I have about 5500 miles on my WR g2 tires so far. I replaced the original Integrities with these, and so far the MPG is slightly better than the originals. I went with the 185/65 15's, but I think that the steering is slightly more vague than with the originals. The traction and cornering is vastly improved, however.

    That's good news. :)

I'm going to try out the Nokian i3 later in the Fall.

How is the stability on the highway? I get blown around quite badly by crosswinds with the stock tires.

The snow can get deep here in Idaho, and I have heard that the OEM tires are downright dangerous in the snow, so I am looking real hard at the WR G2's.

The low rolling resistance is a big factor in my decision. How is the noise on concrete highways?

    Thanks in advance,

    Mike

I paid $165.08 per tire at a Tire Factory outlet. Rather steep, although I've seen them as low as $121 online.

Problem is, if you have trouble with them, the on-line retailer will be happy to help if you send them back. I had TripleTreds delivered by UPS and installed by a guy who pointed out that, had I bought them from him I'd get all of the side benefits, but since I bought them elsewhere...

Anyway, my MPG went from around 48 to over 53 by switching to this tire. I'll be looking forward to the ice and snow season.

Here's the result of my first tank on WRG2s...

You can get a price from:

Nokian Tires - Winter Tires, Snow Tires and much more from the Tire Factory

I bought my Nokian WR tires from them 25,500 miles ago (4 for less than $400) and am very pleased with their performance. They replaced my Michelin MXV4+ (went 55,000 miles which replaced the original GY Integrity tites (went 44,500 miles). See the attached spreadsheet to compare their MPGs (The Nokian WR and WRg2 are real LRR tires).

I would be very appreciative if someone who owns a set of these tires would try to answer my two questions about them.

    1. How is the stability on the highway? (I get blown around quite badly by crosswinds with the stock tires.)

    2. How is the noise on concrete highways?

    Mike,
They are much better than the GY Integrity tires (It's hard to be worse).
The WRs can be somewhat noisy due to their agressive tread design. This is what gives the great snow/ice traction.

The WRg2 tread is agressive on one edge and standard touring on the other edge so they are a compromise - A little quieter but a little less snow traction.

The Nokian i3 should also do well and be quiet, but it is a strictly summer tire and I have no real data.

Re: Nokian WR G2... Highly Recommended!

Thanks Jeff. I was looking specifically at the WR-G2 tire. I have had WR's on my Maxima and have liked them, but they seem to wear out kind of fast. (25K for me)

I am glad the G2s will be quieter, but dissappointed to hear they may not get the same traction in the snow as the regular WRs. Overall however, there is not another tire with all the attributes I want. The low rolling resistance is very high on my list.

I think I am going to buy a set of the G2s. We get some pretty nasty winters here in Idaho, so they will definitely see snow and ice. I will let the rest of you know how they fare.

    Thanks for all your help.

Sorry for dragging up an old post. I have the WRG2's on my 2005 Prius in Colorado. They give me far better handling than my old 4WD ever did.

We just had a nasty, fast 5 inch dump that turned the roads into an ice rink, but I didn't have a single issue. Cornering was superb. The most important attribute is slush and the WRG2s are superb!

I put a full set of these tires on my 2007 Prius last Sept. I have now had a chance to use them in snow. For the first time since I bought my Prius I now feel confident driving it in snow. The tires grip the road better then any all season tire I have ever owned. Granted I have never spent as much for tires as these but they are well worth the cost. I notice that even when the Traction control kicks in it is much less severe then with the integrities. My mileage has not really changed one way or the other. I do a lot of short drives now a days which does not help much. But I love these tires.

+1 on the WRg2 tires. As for cost, I paid more for my previous Micheline MXV4+ Energy tires. The Micheline tires were great tires, but so far the WRg2s seem even better.

+2 on the WR G2s...for the short time they've been on the car and on the road (1 month hiatus for accident repairs) they are noticeably better and reassuring in all kinds of weather. Our street doesn't get plowed much and the Prius now gets out quite readily. The VSC still kicks in at times but is much less aggressive (similar to dhoward's observation); they also move a good deal of snow (noticed this while wife was driving up our street)...paid around $125/tire out the door...

That sounds about right. Mine cost a smidgen over $500 installed for the set of four, including taxes.

When I stated (in an earlier posting) that the WRg2 would have somewhat lower traction in snow than the earlier WR model, it was based on the less aggressive tread design. You all should remember that the WR had better traction in snow than many real snow tires and now that I have WRg2 tires they are still quite good in snow. These are great tires.
