Unplug it. Speaker is behind the front bumper on the driver's side i believe.
There's a thread somewhere here about it.

Just unplugged mine by reaching down there a minute ago. Pretty easy. Just down and to the left of driver headlight when standing in front of the car.

Is this noise maker we're talking about the thing that makes it sound like its a space ship?

Interesting... I will take a look at this myself. So just unplug and that's it?

Yes it is that simple. But getting to it is a challenge. Unless you have rather slim arms and smaller hands, getting to it will require removal of the front bumper or jacking up the driver side front of the car, removal of the tire and some of the plastic undersiding / wheel well splashguard. It took me about 30 minutes total time to do and I just removed the VPNS altogether - unclipped the wire connection and then unbolted the unit. It sits on a garage shelf now.

    Ya, I just reached down.
The hard part was holding the tab down on the plug in order to release it and be able to slide it back, all while your hand/wrist is stuck in a funky position.
Still took just a couple minutes.

I would like to change the noisemaker to a different ringtone. Like ion engines on a TIE fighter. Any hints?

Please don't disconnect it. As everybody knows, the noise makers are little more than license to run-over pedestrians and bicyclists. Although it may sound unethical, it is true and I will explain why.

The NHTSA, NFB, and Automotive Alliance used exceptionally weak 'studies' to declare hybrids and our Prius 'killer cars.' This led to passing S.841 that mandates noise makers on all hybrids and electric cars. These reports did not use fatal accident but just 'injury' accidents and the both NHTSA reports have different 'numbers' reporting the risk. So run the experiment.

It will only be a matter of time until blind, pedestrians, and bicyclists are crushed and killed under a noise-maker Prius. Leave the car running with the noise maker bleeping and make sure the police report includes a 'working noise maker.' Make sure your insurance company and lawyer know this was the case ... if not a defense, it is a mitigating factor.

This bad law was passed on the false claim that noise makers would make our cars safer for pedestrians. Well let's 'do the experiment.' Don't short-circuit it but by all means, make sure any subsequent blind/pedestrian/bicyclist accidents are document in news and police reports that the 'noise maker was working.'

A good quote to offer after a pedestrian/bicyclist accident:
"Why did they not get out of the way? My noise maker was working."

This is called 'reality training' but others have call it 'unintended consequences.' Turning-off the noise maker lets the honorable competition perpetuate their lie. Worse, it can lead to more invasive noise generation (aka., an inverter built without noise suppression of the magnetics.) This bad law, S.841, was written in bolvine fecal matter and will only be erase with time, experience, and sad to say, washed away in blood.

Can the sound file be customized -- say to the sound of a Cosworth or Traco V-8?

Done. The tab on the connector is on top towards where the wires go into the female connector (facing the front of the car). The male connector is attached to the speaker. When pushing down on the tab, pull out on the wires and it will slide right off.

Having small a small hand helps. Otherwise you will have to try removing the panel on the bottom of the car and go at it from there.
