No hooks for floor mats

I have a pretty basic question regarding my floor mats. Several months ago I received the mailing from Toyota stating that I should remove my floor mats and put them in the "trunk." Now, I haven't actually done that (so if my floor mat gets stuck under the pedal, that would be my fault). However, there are no hooks holding my driver's side mat in place -- there are just no hooks in the floor period. I called my dealership, and the service guy said that's how it should be. Can that be correct? Is anyone else missing these hooks?

I'm not overly concerned about the mats moving, they are pretty secure just from the underside cleats in the carpet. Still -- I do have empty holes in both the mats and the floor where the hooks should be. Also -- if I can obtain said hooks, are they easy to install into the floor?

Where the holes are are where the hooks should be. My 2009 has hooks. Why your dealer said that the missing hooks are OK on a Prius leads me to wonder if the dealer thought you had a different car.

I don't think so -- I believe he repeated it saying it was normal for my car. Of course, he probably should have said that I need to remove the mats anyway according to the recall (though I've never received any "further instruction" about what to do other than stick them in the trunk -- so that essentially means just don't use the floormats, which isn't really acceptable with bisque interior).

Your dealer is wrong. They screwed up and didn't install the hooks in your car and didn't even leave a bag with the hooks in your car. I would take it back to the dealer and demand they install the hooks.

Thanks Tom. I knew it didn't make any sense, but I thought I would check to be sure. It seems pretty bad that the service dept couldn't offer to send me the hooks or to install them, as basic and small of an item as that. Maybe they were overloaded that day or something.

I did check for a separate bag with the hooks but I don't have them. They were probably just missed during the routine preparation of the car.

I think it happens occasionally (but your dealer service department's response was surprising).

My sister in Lugoff, South Carolina drove up to New York with her new Avalon. I was checking it out and noticed immediately that her dealer had also omitted to install the hooks.

As said above, you should have hooks.

NC Prius, over time I've read a number of posts that the dealer omitted installing the required hooks - so you're not alone. I also have the gen II Prius and my dealer installed them on delivery. As already suggested phone the dealer(make sure they have the parts available) that you're coming in for them to install them as required for safe mat installation.
    Good luck,

Call them again. If they refuse to help, call Toyota USA. The number is in your owners manual. The dealer needs to be slapped upside the head! THIS is what causes "unintended problems"!

You -must- have the clips installed. The recall says it's ok to use the carpeted floor mats with the clips properly installed. It says "take the car to the dealer and have them install the clips and properly secure the mats." It says the "all weather" mats should NOT be used until they supply replacements (presumably clipable).

FYI I bought all weather Prius mats from a Canadian dealer (50% off:)) and they can be and are hooked properly. (Canadian all weather OEM mats are different from the ones sold in the US.)

It's the same with the US all weather mats. They clip into the same holes as the carpet mats.

In all fairness, the sales person who prepared my car was new and only remained at the dealer for 2 months. Although granted, maybe they should have checked behind her -- and certainly the guy in the service dept should have told me otherwise. My impression is that some at the dealer are more customer-friendly and conscientious than others. When we purchased the car, the woman in finance told us that most people don't actually finance their cars -- they buy them outright. That one really has to make you wonder! But the person who actually sold us the car is great (she was out when we actually picked up the car, so a different person than the one who prepared the car). You couldn't find a better sales person. So ... it's just one of those things ... I'm not that upset about it.

You're very understanding and forgiving - that's nice:) (especially these days). Good luck with the fix.

2007 Gen II, purchased new. OEM mats, no hooks, no bag of hooks. If the dealers had all installed the $.05 hooks, it might have saved Toyota millions of dollars. They probably could have manufactured a hundred hooks for the cost of the recall notice they mailed me. I think the mat interfering with the go pedal problem (if its really a problem) is mostly the Dealer's fault.

    I am hook-less also.

We bought our 2008 used a year ago at our local Toyota Dealer and it had no hooks. Just the carpet type mats with the hook holes in them.

I would like to see one. Anyone have a nice photo to share of a floor mat hook?

    Hi Bob,

The hook a/k/a "positive retention clip" pushes and snaps into the hole in the floor (and rotates freely 360 degrees within the hole).

Here are two photos of the hooks, first with the mat off and then with the mat on:

Thanks for the pics. I'm hoping to get some next week at the local dealer near my work. Maybe I should take pics and add it to the "Mods" section, or at least list them on my signature. :)
