I can't watch those here at work, but if it's as bad as you say, we can alway go in and snip the leads to the speaker. :p

Be aware that the Nissan website seems to be having trouble. I got the first video to start, but I was too impatient to wait for the others.

Great, now I can't see my screen due to all of the barf on it. I don't remember eating that for lunch.

Not a good sign, but I am still looking forward to owning one when they finally get to Oklahoma. The dealership that is within eyesight from my front yard is the one that I picked when when I made my reservation. I went in about a month ago and got acquainted with a nice man there that was quite knowledgeable about the leaf.

Well guess what, the dealership has changed hands and that man is no longer there. Wednesday I went in again to strike up a friendship with the new sales manager. I think that it is safe to say that I know as much about the Leaf as he does. Maybe more.

Still really excited about the Leaf.

Actually the forward noise sounds cool, like a turbine engine. What the heck is responsible - a really big cooling fan on the power inverter or the drive motor(s)?

At least blind pedestrians will hear this thing coming.

It's a little high pitched for my tastes, but I don't find it totally objectionable.

Haha...that's awesome! Instead of people looking fore/aft to avoid being hit by a Nissan Leaf they'll be looking up in the sky for the Jumbo Jet that is flying overhead! The reverse sound is not so good...but I could live with the forward sound.

The 2010 Prius makes an audible noise when moving forward on battery power...not as audible as the Leaf...but it is clear when driving with the windows down.

If it is indeed made by a speaker, I could imagine downloading different sounds to it, like ringtones.

I would want mine to sound like George Jetson's skycar...or a TIE fighter.

I wish I could add that sound to my Prius in parking lots. I am absolutely sure there will be a way to defeat the sound output. What gets me annoyed is that this is just another way of the government interfering in our way of life. Why not add sound makers to people who are very light on their feet? What about bicycles? DUMB!!!!

Nissan has corrected a Prius pet peeve. At least their backup beeper works OUTSIDE of the car. I would prefer the standard construction equipment horn.

I'm not worried about the stock noise maker. I'm already in the process of marketing a PERFECTLY WONDERFUL sound for the leaf:

    Reverse- not a problem.
Forward- the number one reason I didn't sign up for a LEAF. Thanks to NHTSA trying to protect a few thousand people who don't want to take responsibility for their own safety.

From reading these comments I prepared for the worst. I watched (and heard) the video and am not too disappointed. I do not think the car needs a sound, nor do I like the sound, but it is not so bad that it will make me not want the car.

Is that a Hooverâ„¢ under the hood, or is your Leaf just happy to see me?

Now that I've had a chance to listen, my opinions are aligned with what most everyone else here has already said. The forward sound is *almost* cool, very stereotypical sci-fi electric car sound, but that backup sound has GOT to go. Why can't the just use the industry standard beep-beep-beep like large trucks and other such vehicles use? Everyone already knows what THAT sound means.

But, I'm almost 100% certain this WILL be hacked. If not, there's always the 'ol snip-snip I mentioned earlier. How'd *that* happen? :p

It would be cool though if Nissan let us change out own sounds, like ringtopnes, but I doubt that will happen. There needs to be some sort of industry standard so people know its a car and not a cellphone or some such...

The industry standard should be "don't walk on the road with your head up your butt." but that will never happen. If we need a standard noise my vote for an international standard would be a B-52 at full throttle. This is the last sound the enemy hears before being blown to Hell.
