I've had my Prius for a couple of years now, but have never had a house with a garage until this weekend. I've got the homelink button all set up to open and close the garage door. Here's the question. My wife also has a Prius. If I program her homelink button as well, does that mean that we don't need to carry the garage door remote in either car? I mean, is the point of homelink so that you don't have to buy multiple remotes or just so that you can press the button and keep the remote in the glovebox? Thanks in advance!
Yep, the point of it is so you don't need the remote that came with the opener in the car. The Homelink system is now the remote in a sense. You can leave the remote in the glove box if one chooses, it will not affect anything, but there isn't a need to once you have the opener programmed to a button in Homelink. My Homelink uses two buttons for 2 separate garage doors and I don't carry either remote in the vehicle.
Our Prius is set to open 2 doors and we don't carry either remote. As long as both cars open the door, no reason to carry the remote. Obviously we carry a key to the house in case the openers fail.
Thanks guys. I figured that was the case, but wanted to be sure. And I'm glad I thought about this before paying for another remote. PC saves people money everyday.
I put my remote in a safe place with the battery out, so if I get another car with home link, syncing it up will be no problem- as long as I remember where that safe place is....
A little hint for those remotes and flashlights you hardly ever use but need to work when you need them. Use the "Energizer Lithium" cells if the devices use AAA, AA, or 9V size. They won't leak -ever-, and have an advertised shelf life of 11 years. I have some that are almost 20 years old and still work just fine. Expensive, but very reliable.
