"New York, NY—New York’s yellow cabs are going green, as the City Council approves the swift passage of Intro 664, the “Clean Air Taxis Act†that would jumpstart the conversion of New York City’s taxi fleet to less-polluting, more fuel-efficient hybrid vehicles. Since New York’s taxi fleet has approximately 13,000 cabs, the move would immediately help reduce New York City’s crushing air pollution burden, while also providing a boon to New York City’s cabbies. Hybrid cars get almost double the miles per gallon as standard models."

    NY yellow cabs go green

I imagine they'll be using the Ford SUV as the cab. But at least it uses HSD technology.

    And to quote another article:

""People are now realizing this vehicle is here to stay," said Earl Seibert, a sales consultant at Day Toyota in Pleasant Hills, where buyers must wait eight weeks for the popular Prius.

"It's not a fad. It's something that is going to be here (in the long run), and it's the immediate answer to getting away from the fossil fuels.""

High gas prices fuel hybrid interest

Hybrids are on a roll now and their numbers will only grow. In a few years, as the models and numbers grow, they will be mainstream instead of "trendy".
