Anyone know how long it takes to get a replacment windshield? Rock hit mine, put 4 stars in upper left corner. Glass shop says they may not be able to repair and then told me not to use heat until they tried to fix it or it would run for sure! I sure hope they can fix it today, it was 24 degrees when I left for work this morning.
My wife had a tree branch come out from nowhere (sneaky tree!) and whack into the back of my Prius when she was backing up in a friend's driveway. This broke the smaller window on the back hatch. I have glass insurance with my Allstate account, so that directed me to a particular glass repair shop. They had to order a replacement window from Toyota but it came in just a day, and now all is well except for the glowering looks my car gives to my wife when she comes near.
Howdy RBW111 Not sure about El Dorado, but in Dallas my replacement windshield was in stock. Since I inisisted on a Toyota brand (to preserve the "original" nature of the Prius), there was an overnight delay only. Took the glass company less than 45 minutes to replace the windshield and they were able to preserve the license and inspection stickers. Finally, only your glass company can answer your question.
Hey Rhett, by coincidence I was at a glass shop asking questions yesterday. For one thing, they seemed quite surprised that the $20 star crack repair I had done 3 1/2 years ago had not spread further. We might infer from this that people in the know do not regard such repairs as very durable. Such repairs now cost $40, at least at this place in Escondido, CA. They suggested that the worst crack propagation happens when hot "defrost" air hits a cold windshield - I guess that this conforms with your understanding. Putting all this together, if I lived in a cold place and had 4 new "stars", quite likely I would be looking for new glass. I got a price of $240 for aftermarket glass for the 2001 Prius. Will do that eventually. Surprising that there are still folks who curiously gather around with questions about this old car.
I had one replaced in my Accord last year. The guy from the auto glass company came to my house and it took him about 1 or 2 hours. He took care of all the paperwork for the insurance company, all I had to do was sign that I had received a new windshield. He had that one in stock but I recall he mentioned he could get almost any of them in a day or two.
