New GenIII brake recall affects 87,000 cars

I see Toyota says to recall 242,000 vehicles for brake glitch| Reuters also on this.

I wonder if The $3000 Brake Job | PriusChat is related to this and whether that guy will get fully reimbursed...

One of the problems with being an early adopter of a model-year change, infantile problems. We had the 'brake-pause' recall, fixed by a software patch. Now it appears there is a mechanically weak part, the accumulator. These are not related but reflect what happens when a new design shows up . . . often service is reveals problems not otherwise known. It just comes with the territory.

If you want stability, a well-debugged car, buy the last model-year. By then almost all of the early problems have been found, fixed and built-in at the factory to the car.

I'm not part of this recall!

 

This is a new recall, today, June 5, 2013. There's already a notice on my Toyota Owners portal that my vehicle is part of the recall (Prius # 59000).

 

I am part of this recall also. The CNN.com article indicated that the recall was due to owners complaining about having to press harder on the brakes than normal. I have not had this problem but, after hearing the high cost of replacing the brake accumulator parts, I am glad to hear that Toyota appears to be addressing this problem.

 

Does this recall apply to international customers or just the lucky US customers only??

 

I've already had the brake actuator replaced (under the extended warranty). I don't know if my Prius is affected. It is a 2010 Prius.
In general I have noticed that the brakes on my 2010 Prius are just not as strong as on my 2005. It's the only weakness of the car, but it is irritating. I wish they had stayed with the gen 2 braking system.

Toyota lets some things go, and other things, like this brake issue, they get on it much quicker. I marvel at the rational how one thing that's prone to fail gets put off for years, while the next thing gets done much quicker. We got put off for our inverter cooling for a long time ... while the MFD failures got recalled pretty quick. The brake-pause was stalled for a good amount of time ... but this brake issue ... boom. Much quicker. It's a mystery.

On the Toyota Owner's website under the FAQ section they list 82,000 US owners with build dates between March 2009 and early October 2009. My build date is July 2009.

The article stated that the majority of the cars were in Japan.

 

I have the 2012 and the brakes aren't like that. I had to emergency brake about a week ago and thought I was going to go through the windshield it stop so quickly. I was doing 60 at the time and went to zero in no time. The car behind me swerved off the road (THANKFULLY!) so I didn't get rear ended. Luckily no vehicles were damaged, I did however have to change my shorts afterwords and buy an air freshener.

 

When I have had to emergency brake, the car does stop quickly. But under normal braking it is not as strong as the 2005 Prius, which has the best brakes I've ever experienced. Odd, since the gen 3 car has 4 wheel disc brakes.

 

Hmmmm... well that's strange, because for the first few weeks of driving my 2012 I had to keep reminding myself not to press too hard on the brakes so I wouldn't end up stopping way to short.

 

I believe this is linked to The $3000 Brake Job | PriusChat I had the exact same problem, and the dealer has been installing a new accumulator / master cylinder since last week.... great timing!!

 

Looks like mine is affected... guess I'll wait for the letter.

 

If you go to the Reuters story linked in cwerdna's post above, you will see that international customers are included.
The 242K cars in the Reuters headline include those recalled worldwide (I think), and the 87K number in other headlines appears to be US numbers.

BTW, what exactly IS a brake pressure accumulator?
