New Commercial. Who Wants To Drift?

    If you blink you'll miss the little bit of green at the end. Maybe this is why models die out: they get to the irrational exuberance stage?

    I would be willing to bet that when that commercial was done the traction control was disengaged. I could swear I saw the front tires spinning excessively. Could be a illusion though or wanting to think I saw it. Either way, to me it was not realistic. But is anything realistic in today's market?

    That occurred to me too. But it's sad to see Toyota embracing this so wholeheartedly. I do feel it's become a one sided conversation. Someone over there has a got a brainwave, and no one's inclined to dissuade them.

    Soon after gen 4 images starting breaking, I dug out my 2010 Prius brochure, it's sitting on my desk now, lol. Completely different mindset.

    I saw way too many people intentionally drifting in a crowded ski hill parking lot on Monday, with plenty of potential collateral damage both parked and walking through the same space. Mostly Subaru WRXs, but some others too.

    One kid in a WRX must have had bald tires, and didn't know any other snow driving technique other than spin 'em fast with traction control turned off. On a very shallow slope, he could not get off the snow wall at the bottom, and even slid back into it a couple times after skiers on foot pushed him free.

    The sane drivers were having no problem at all.

    might be their best commercial yet. i wonder if they could edit it for television.

    Now this commercial is so much better than the one with the model and the photographer. This commercial shows glimpses of newer engineering while enticing people to see the car as more than just an old folks gas saver. Can it really perform on the road like it does in the commercial? I don't know. Haven't driven one yet. But, the car style and lines is growing on me. It does look futuristic.

    It's a change from the cute, fluffy, cuddly Prius commercials we are used to and that I sort of liked, but hey, new audience.

    Driver was obviously coordinated at using the foot enabled emergency brake for the slides.

    As an owner of gen2 and 3's, I cringed when watching turns from the rear on rough surfaces...knowing the 1-2 second lag between hitting a bump and having brakes;)
    Drift, I think not, drift is forward movement sideways due to outrageous torque applied loosely by burning rubber.
    Hated the music, indifferent to the overall message, obviously not the target audience...yawn.

    1st Gen - Prius Genius. The innovative idea of combining the best of two powerplants in a compact, city friendly package. It still featured "big car" amenities like remote keyless entry, alloy wheels, automatic climate control and a CD player. (Opt nav in the US)

    2nd Gen - Prius Tech. Pushing the boundaries of technology in the midsize class with bluetooth, Smart Entry & Smart Start (later renamed Smart Key System) and, in the US, Bi-Xenon headlights.

    3rd Gen - Sunshine and rainbows. It's America's best selling hybrid but better. Same ultra low emissions, better fuel economy, better aerodynamics (the most hours spent in a wind tunnel than any Toyota), more high tech gadgetry like DRCC, SPVS w/ Remote A/C, IPA, PCS and LKA. (FutureWow was the Canadian tagline)

    4th Gen - Beyond Possible. A hybrid that's kind to the environment but still enjoyable to drive and looks cool. Oh and apparently a kickass JBL GreenEdge audio system.


    The 4th Gen marketing may not appeal to the Prius faithful but its timing and message actually works well with today's economy. Playing Gen 3 ads today won't fly since oil prices are low and petroleum pump prices are low. Everyone knows a Prius gets excellent mileage so now here's a different kind of Prius. Here's a Prius you'll enjoy driving. This isn't your father's Prius. That's the target market in my opinion.

    I use to laugh when Volkswagen or some other automaker would introduce their Eco Friendly car and market it on the basis that it didn't drive like a "Prius". As if this was a positive for their vehicle and a negative for Prius.

    It's kind of sad that Toyota seems to be now marketing The Prius as a vehicle that doesn't drive like a Prius.

    It's OK though.

    I have to try to temper my reaction, because I came to Prius and became interested in Prius on the basis of its efficiency.
    I've never particularly expected or wanted the driving experience that Toyota seems to be championing.

    I have to temper my reaction because evolution is good. Even if it is something that I have not prioritized.
    I suppose in the simplest of terms, the best way to reach a younger and broader audience is to be able to say, The Prius is a good looking car, and it's no longer a compromise in handling or driving feel.

    I probably do like this commercial the most. It sends it's message very directly. You can't watch it, and NOT get the message that The Prius's driving dynamics have changed.

    I haven't driven a Gen 4 Prius but I suppose my concern would be this:

    Let's say a potential customer is impressed by this commercial and thinks " I want to try one of those new "Sports Car Like" Prius". So they test drive.

    OK...then, it may have superior driving characteristics and feedback to a Gen 3 Prius, but is it still going to fall short in comparison to a regular ICE sports car?
    To the broader first time audience could the reaction be, it's OK for a Hybrid, but it's no BMW, or Audi?

    There just seems to be a level of "Over Compensation" here by Toyota.
    As if years of being the butt of jokes, and even having it's manliness questioned has resulted in Toyota wanting to "Prove" The Prius can succeed as a "Good Looking, Sporty Vehicle".

    Again I'm OK with the evolution. It's probably necessary and might even be great. I just wonder why Toyota seems so focused on proving this Prius isn't like a "Prius".
