NEW 8 Yr / 125,000 Mile Warranty?

There has been some buzz about new warranties coming out in August.

What was the price they quoted?

 

Wow, thats a lot...the 7 year one was like $1100.

 

When I bought my Prius, the dealer offered me the 7yr/100K extended warranty for $1850, discounted to $1500.00. I had seen the price here on Prius Chat of $1050, so there was no reason to buy from the dealer. I've been waiting to see the offer for the rumored 8yr/125K extended warranty. But, the Prius seems so reliable, I'm debating if the extended warranty is just an unnecessary expense. --TK

 

The main thing I worry about is how long these batteries last. It just seems like these cars haven't been around long enough to really know how long these things are going to last. And with everything digital and all the electronics it seems like even small things that can go wrong could be spendy to fix.

Now, will I buy an extended warranty when my car comes in? Probably not. I just do worry though that 36k miles or 3 years doesn't seem like a long time, especially for me since I put on 20k+ miles in a year.

I guess it's a crap shoot in the end. You may buy it and never need it. You may not buy it and end up spending a fortune in repairs. I guess you need to go on the statistics at the end of the day.

 

Same here. I'd get the 125k warranty if it's only $400-500 more than the 100k. I know many, many people say the battery and electronics are nothing to worry about, but I can't help it.

 

100K and even 200K are pretty common on the current batteries. I have 129K on my 2005 and it runs like the day I bought it. See the 100K and 200K club entries in the Gen II discussion area.

 

All of the hybrid components including the traction battery are covered for 8 years/100K miles. If you live in California (and maybe a couple of other states as well) it will be covered under the emissions warranty for even longer.

Also don't forget you have 3 years/36K miles to decide if you want the extended warranty, and you can usually get the best deal on it through this site anyway.

 

The CARB states warranty for the hybrid components is 10 years/150,000 miles. The first Prius is now 10 years old. Very few batteries have failed out of warranty and most of those I read about were from abuse. If you want to damage the traction battery run out of gas. When the car shuts off restart & run. Continue until the car dies. Pay for a tow to the dealer and buy a new battery.

 

We purchased our Prius under C for C, on July 25th. The Finance Manager told us about the new warranty coming out August 1st (8 year/125k). He quoted $1800 for the new warranty. We are interested in purchasing this warranty, but am hoping something will be available from "Troy" on this site soon regarding a price.

 

The batteries are the least of my worries for long term ownership. It's the little things that can eat your lunch.

The first Prius in Japan shipped in 1997...about 12 years old. The first US shipments were in 2000 (2001 model year) and will be 9 years old in a few months. My 2001 was one of the first after the demo units, in October of 2000.
In that car, not only have I not had any issues with the traction battery, I haven't even needed to replace the 12v battery. I have had to replace both fob batteries.

The 6yr/125K was only $1245 and $990 for the 5yr/125. I drive a lot of miles but if I didn't then having the peace of mind for an 8 year warranty for $1630 seems like one of the best options out there for the Prius. That's a long time for no worry driving.

 

That next 25,000 miles is a big risk for most cars.

 

I just called a Toyota dealer that someone out of Kansas recommended and he said ~$1250 for the 7 yr/125k $0 deductible warranty. I drive about 17k miles per year so I might get it. 17k x 7 = 119k miles.

If the car is sold before the warranty is over, one could likely get some of the money back. I imagine that a Prius with 20k+ miles left on the warranty would be worth $300++ more than one with no warranty.

 

Something else to consider. If one were disciplined and could set aside $50/month, one would have more than enough to pay for the 8 year warranty before the 36 months expired.

You could probably set up a savings account that would automatically withdraw funds from a checking account each month; that might make it easier.
