New 2006's $2,200 off MSRP (Virginia/DC)

You're killing me. Hopefully I will be picking up my 06 package 5 tomorrow but my deal is at MSRP.

Any reason for the price drops? Is demand for the 06 dropping off this early? Or, have we almost run out of potential Prius owners?

 

WOW... I can't believe that much of a discount....

 

Searching for airfare from Atlanta to Dulles to see if this is cost effective.

Current arrangement: Silver pkg 5 at sticker $26,287 (including toyoguard for $699 thanks to SET cartel) plus $199 doc fee and GA sales tax of $1,854. Not including misc. fees, it comes to $28,340.

Miller Toyota internet special: Silver pkg 6 for $24,430 plus $198 doc fee and GA sales tax of $1,724. Not including misc. fees, it comes to $26,352.

Comes to savings of $1,988. Estimate $250 for one-way airfare, $100 for overnight stay, $50 meals, and $30 for gas, my net savings would still be about $1,500. Forgot about travel from airport to dealer. Maybe the dealer will pick me up. Eric, can I get a ride?

Calm down ... call dealer tomorrow to verify stock and price. Then call local dealer to see if we can negotiate (not likely). Then try to explain to my wife.

 

See if you can buy it and have them ship it to you. I was offered that when I bought my car in vegas, but already had tickets to fly over. ($29.00) and just a 5 hour drive back

 

I thought that I read somewhere where Toyota was like doubleing the number of Prius's produced for 06, and this could be the start of that.

 

No, quite the opposite. There will be no increase in Prius Production in 06. We've discussed this a couple of times here with links to the press releases.

Presumably all Toyota's excess available Hybrid Parts are Camry-bound.

I had just gotten myself to wait til May to see the new color!

At least they don't have Black or I'd be on the phone with my dealer negotiating to match it or saying adios and driving to Manassas.

I had heard that the best time to buy a car is the end of any month....I guess it is very true in this case.

 

Is there a single Prius model for entire U.S ? For other car, CA has a different emission standard. So bringing a car to CA does take some work. Wonder this is the case for Prius.

 

Today's Washington Post shows at least 3 different northern VA dealers discounting Prius #6 (though this one does look cheapest.)

Hmmm. This doesn't exactly sound like the supply shortage we've all been moaning about.

Now if I could only find an equivalent deal on the #4 I really want (somewhere out-of-region but not so far from DC....)

I thought I did really well when I got $1000 off MSRP when I bought my '06 Prius last month. Now I'm kicking myself as I could have saved $1000 by just waiting one more month. But you can't predict the future and besides I am really enjoying the car.

There definitely does not seem to be a shortage here in the DC area, especially for package #6.

 

This is fantastic news. Our local dealers have had standing stock of 15-25 cars since late January. I've been hoping this would help my bargaining position in May. Now I can walk in with a DC trump card!

 

Well, Sarah at Miller Toyota came through this morning with a silver package 6 for $24,423. They even offered to pay my cabfare from Dulles to get the car.

But my local dealer called this morning also to say the car had arrived. So I used the DC deal as leverage and negotiated $1,000 off MSRP, free carpet mats and 2 free oil/rotation (5,000 and 10,000 services). Still not as good of a deal. My total cash out including taxes for the package 6 from DC would have been about $900 less than my current deal on a package 5. But the car is already here and I don't have to make the trip and pay for hotel and airfare (about $450). And the HID lights and foglamps were not essential for me.

Another factor is pending legislation for a GA income tax credit (HB21). The way it is currently written requires the dealer to be registered in Georgia. The credit could be worth up to $5,000 if it gets passed as written (I hear they are redrafting). That could make up for the price difference and then some.

With that said, Sarah and crew at Miller were fantastic to work with on the deal. If my dealer woudn't have come down, I would probably be on a plane. I had already packed a bag, printed directions, etc.

 

The Prius meets or exceeds emission standards in all 50 states including CA. I'm not even sure if you need to go through an emissions test with a Prius in CA (I've lived in NM for too long to know, but one of the CA folks should know). The only thing I would wonder about is longer warranty on the hybrid components you get in CA. Does that mean you have to buy the car in CA to get the longer warranty?

 

As far as registering a new car purchased out of state in California, make sure to do your homework. I believe that even if the car will meet California emission standards, you will not be able to register it if the odometer has less than 7,500 miles. Also check on paying the use tax, which is the way to get sales tax from you if you purchased out of state. In short, be careful and know exactly what you are doing.

VA has been one of the hotbeds of Prus ownership due to HOV access, so if discounts are happening there, I would expect the trend to expand across the US pretty quickly.

So I expect discounted from msrp to become commonplace .. at least until the next petrol price spike.

I wonder if anyone is taking advantage of the tax credits and low Prius prices to buy now, and resell in the next year to gain car use for free for a year (or so).

 

Doesn't the law require you to keep the car for some period of time (3 years?) or you owe the credit back?

 

Tempus, I believe you are correct. However, we won't know for sure until the IRS publishes instructions.

Really, the IRS is paying for the first year's depreciation. Even if you wait 3 years to sell, you have the best chance of coming out ahead.

 

So, I've been tempted and in checking around noticed Alexandria Toyota also has plenty in stock at an internet list price of $1800 off MSRP. It's a good thing my dad is busy, or I think I'd be on my way to a dealer right now.

I really should wait til May and see the Magnetic Gray like I've been telling myself for months. But at these prices, is waiting going to mean I pay more?
