Never witnessed full battery ('08)

Here's a question - On my '08 Prius Touring which I've driven about 600 miles now the maximum battery I've seen is 6 bars, never full.
I have a friend with a '07 Prius that also has the same experience.
Do I need to get down from a big mountain to see 8 bars?
I'm getting about 50mpg from my 10 miles commute.
Thanks for any insight (pun intended!)

When we rented a Prius in September, the only time I saw a full battery was when we drove down from Boulder City down to Lake Mead. Of course, the AC was on full most of the time we had the car. My guess is you won't see a full battery very often.

With my 2007 touring the only time I see green is when my Scangauge II shows the SOC at 65 or over. The highest I have seen the SOC reading is about 68, but I have not been down any really long hills (since we don't have any around here).

The Scangauge II has really helped me adjust my driveing to get a little better MPG. I am still not very good at the P and G but am working on it.

We have a '07, and I've seen full green bars a couple times, when going down a long grade enroute from SAN to Yuma. Otherwise, most always one green bar down from the top. It's normal.

Strange. My 07 Prius seems to float around 7 green bars and 6 blue bars. I basically get 7 green bars every time I drive the car. I've had full 8 green bars 4-5 times, and then you can hear the engine starting to spin to provide some drag. But this engine spinning is way less than putting your car i B mode.

All above is normal. It takes a moderate hill in a Prius to get a full battery icon. I've only gotten the battery icon on our Highlander Hybrid full twice...once going down the west side from Eisenhower tunnel the other going down the East side from the Eisenhower! Much tougher to get it 'full'.

I see full battery every day at the bottom of a long down hill run just before I select B mode for the last little bit.

Three years and three months of driving a Prius and I've seen a completely green battery maybe three times.

I see 7 bars occasionally when driving around town without A/C. I've only seen 8 bars after a long downhill trip.

You've never had the "sixty to zero surprise" secondary-highway
traffic light goes yellow and it's slightly downhill and you have to
stop pretty hard from high speed? That generally brings it to 7,
and can do 8 on a couple of, uh, "special" downhills around here.
But these are relatively modest hills, it's just the fact that I
have to put all that kinetic energy somewhere RIGHT NOW.

Now that I have the heat on more frequently, I see 7 green bars several times each day. Without the heat on, I would see 7 green bars infrequently. I've seen 8 green bars twice in the past two months, but neither time did it last more than 15 or 20 seconds.

Hills? The highest point in our county is less than 900 feet above sea level, and it is only about 200 feet above the surrounding prairie.

Sometimes I'll fill my battery all the way up (the last 2 green bars), or at least lately, get 7 bars, but yeah, you need to do a lot of coasting. I was actually able to keep it on 7 bars (green battery) for about 10 miles a few days ago, using a lot of pulse and glide.

I have an '08 Touring and, with the exception of very short trips, I get a partial green battery almost everytime. I have 1,900 miles on the Prii now and have only once been able to get a full green battery on the screen. This was done while driving in-town.

I see the green battery all the time as I drive up hill to drop my daughter to school in the AM (8 miles) and then back down to work. Not to change the subject but I've only been in the purple zone probably once or twice....(winter and stuck in traffic at night)

Our 08 Touring is full green quite a bit. It's much easier (blue) than the 05 we had. My wife even gets green without trying.

An interesting thing occurs at 8 green bars, if you're in EV mode you get kicked out.

Happened to me a while ago. Turned on EV mode (to impress friends by cruising in stealth), then went down a long hill.

In fact, long downhills are the only times I've seen the full 8 green bars (80% SOC), and slow stop-and-go traffic is the only time I get down to the purple.

I drive only about 20 highway miles to work and see green almost every day in my 07 tourinig. In fact it worries me a little to see the green bars and still the ICE is charging the batteries.. No hills around here either.

I have an 08 Touring. I get 7 green almost every day going to work. First 4 of the 10 miles are mostly down hill with a couple of lights. Coming back the other way I rarely get green. Haven't seen 8 bars yet.

We have our 07 for 4 months now. We will hit 1900 miles next week. We usually drive about 6 miles, twice a day - city driving only and get on the highway only once in a while. We are getting 46 mpg so far and it is decreasing as my husband drives it more than I do. He is not cooperating; he has not changed his driving (not coasting).

We get 8 green bars quite often these past 3-4 weeks. What happens if you get full green bars? Won't the battery continue to store the extra charges?

I got purple bars once in heavy & rainy traffic. I panicked. I thought the car was going to die on me. It won't, will it? :(

Love this little car, btw. I still can't figure out how to set the cruise control. I'll figure it out when we get on the highway. :D

Relax and have confidence that the car is taking care of itself. The car's computer is very protective of the battery. When it hits 8 bars, it will take steps to avoid additional charging, and when "in the pink" (or purple, depending on the model and your color perception), it will become more aggressive in charging it and favoring only the ICE for propulsion.

As for your husband cooperating, you do know how to fix that, don't you?? :D
