I have a 2005 Prius that is showing a DTC code of "P0A2B drive motor A temp sensor circuit range performance". I took it to the local dealer here and they said it needs a new trans-axle, for the low cost of $4700. I have read that a better option is to find an independent shop that will put in a used trans-axle. I looked on Car-Part.com and found several trans axles within easy driving distance for between $250 and $750. I have a few questions before I do this:

    1) Are the trans-axles for the 2005 all the same or do I need to be more specific in selecting a used one. Would a trans-axle from a 2006 or after work?

    2) Is there anything to look out for when buying a used trans-axle (other than high mileage). Anything I need to specifically ask the seller or to make sure is included?

    3) The car started making a noticeable whine or roar when accelerating and decelerating, but otherwise is driving as normal. Is this something that could cause a sudden breakdown or will it go a little while until I can get it fixed?

Thank you for any help/Information you can give me.

Ask the dealer if they'd be ok with installing a used one?

Yea, I did and they acted like they didn't even understand what I was asking. They said they would look around for one, but that they were hard to find. I went to car-part.com and within minutes found several within easy driving distance for me to pick up.

There are plenty out there, try and get 08-09 one with lowish mileage. Make sure the junkyard did not cut any of the orange cables. Don't buy the tranny if they did, they can be a PITA to transfer over if you have to remove the end plate of the tranny.

BTW, 04-09 are all the same, except sometimes a couple of the gray electrical connectors are different but easy to swap out.

    Replacing the tranny is quite easy, once you remove the wiper cowl and inverter it's pretty straightforward, in many ways easier than a typical automatic front wheel drive transmission. Any shop should be able to do it. Here are some notes I wrote up on the procedure;

Update: After calling around I found a local shop that would acquire and install an used transaxle for $2400. Later that day, the dealership called me back and said they could put in a used transaxle for $2500. I decided to go with the dealership because the price difference was negligible, they said they would give me a car while the work is being done and I assume they have access to more resource with experience than the local place. Will update again when work is done.

P.S> Was surprised that the local chain transmission places were simply uninterested in doing the work. I called 2 Cottman places and they both said they didn't really like to put in used transmission, even if they only provided a short term warranty. They also said I probably would have a hard time finding one (Wth?). I also called a Certified Transmission place and they came back with a price of $6000 to put in a re-manufactured transmission. They wouldn't put in a used one. So their price was $1300 MORE than the dealership would charge for a new transmission, and they refused to do anything else.

Maybe the transmission specialty shops are doing some kind of warranty/insurance claims in the main?? Does seem strange.

The transmission shops exist to sell transmissions not install used ones. Not much markup opportunity in something used, hence the $6k quote. But jeeezus, Wow! Good for you for shopping around. What part of the Show-Me State are you in.?

I am not surprised that some transmission shops would refuse the job since their staff is untrained on Toyota hybrids.

I wonder what remanufactured means relative to a Prius transaxle - hope that is better than a reman traction battery. But clearly that price was intended to discourage you.

Your failed transaxle could add a very useful and interesting data point to Bob Wilson's Transaxle Oil Analysis. DRAFT Transaxle Oil Testing Results | PriusChat

If you are the original owner, or second owner, and know that the transaxle fluid (Toyota ATF-WS) was never changed, a small sample of this fluid would provide a useful and interesting data point. All that would be required is to have the mechanic collect a small sample of the fluid (ideally the first few ounces, into a clean, empty water bottle), and send this sample off for analysis.

You would need to contact R&G Labs, to find out cost ($15?) and where to send it.

Update: Unfortunately I didn't see the post about the transaxle fluid until after it was gone.

The dealership did the work and returned the car to me yesterday. The description on the ticket said an electric motor in the transaxle was overheating and needed to be replaced. They found and purchased a used transaxle and put it in, taking about 2 1/2 days.

They provided a car while the work was being done The cost of the transmission and shipping was $995, the labor was $1300. After adding the transaxle seals, misc charges and tax the total was $2433. So far no issues after getting it back. The transaxle lasted 350K miles . Now on to the next item.

Cool. Thats not a bad deal. Keep an eye on the Inverter coolant level as that was replaced also and the level may move around some before it settles in. With the car in ready open the reservoir cap and with a flashlight take a close look at how aggressive the agitation is in the tank is. Watch it for a while. The more aggressive the agitation is the better the circulation.
That coolant is for the trans and the Inverter and is vital.

scargi01, who did you have perform the work.? I'm North of Smithville. Glad it all worked out for you. 350K miles I'd say you did better than well.
