    I’m a first time car buyer who has been doing research for a GenII Prius for the past 6 weeks.

    I’ve found a 2008 Prius Touring Package #6 Leather, nav, backup cam etc.) I have verified 16in 7 spoke wheels and pink/red striped shocks.

    ( 1 ) What should I look out / listen for in the 2nd test drive?

    ( 2 ) If you were buying, is the ODO too high?

    ( 3 ) Any other tips would be greatly appreciated.


    I PLAN TO….
    1) Check for 195/55R16 on the sidewall if it is actually a touring.. Yes
    2) Check for pink and red stripes with blue springs on the rear shocks. Yes, but strips were painted?
    3) Ask for all the service records ( already seen records on Toyota owner’s site)
    4) TechStream CODES
    5) Hybrid Battery Status
    6) Engine water pump leak ( pink crust )
    7) Verify that there are 2 key fobs Only one.
    8) Ask about the sudden increase in mileage. 2nd owner Updated above.

    …..I plan on picking up DIY auto skills to do some of the maintenance myself to offset parts.
    …..I have a skilled family mechanic who is already willing to inspect cars on site with me.
    ......He actually services Toyota cars at his autoshop.
    …..I plan to save money by having most of any repair work done by my family mechanic.
    …..I’m aware of a slightly lower mileage for the Touring.
    …..I’m a very conservative driver in terms of driving habits.


    I have test drive once and visually inspected with my mechanic. I will keep everyone updated as soon as I can.

    That seems like a decent deal. I am a car dealer who specializes in only selling Prius and I have to say that is very decent. Right now the closest thing I have is a 2008 with 94k package 6 that I am selling for $10,995. From what I understand CA Prius prices tend to be more expensive than other places so I'd say that is a hell of a deal.

    You are 100x more educated than most that go into a car purchase, so great job (it's a lot of money and everyone should take the time you have obviously taken before signing). Don't be afraid of a low price, good deals happen. Hybrid battery is the biggest concern but not huge at those miles (like any malfunction though it can happen at any age). Regarding the mystery miles that isn't that big. I drive 70 miles to and from my primary job and 600 a day on my second job so 80-90 a day isn't that strange (to me). In my opinion these gen2 (all I can speak on) prii are very easy for a diy'er to work on. You'll find guides and stories regarding the replacement of nearly every component on those cars here at priuschat and the ones that don't have a write up you'll almost certainly find someone willing to help; the number of knowledgeable people here is amazing. Test drive it, try to replicate the scenario the last person had with the revs (no idea what that would be other than someone not knowing what sounds the car should be making) and go with your gut. I went from a big truck fan to a prius NUT two hours after buying my first one last year. I love these little (yet shockingly roomy for this 6'4" guy) cars.

    it looks like the original owner turned it in on 3/14? and then the dealer put on the 4000 miles before putting it back on the market? am i reading that right?

    Yes. That's the fishy part.

    Based on the mileage on the CarFax, the Car was sold and while under the care of the dealer, the car gained 3960 miles in 48 Days. * see attached image

    * The distance from owner's city and the current dealer's city is 25 miles one way.
    * The typical 5 month mileage of the previous owner was ~1000, making her a typical 12k commuter. So no issues there.



    Any ideas how this could have happened?

    I don't understand why you are concerned about the 4K miles. Maybe the dealer lent the car to a relative to take a cross-country trip. It really doesn't matter, does it?

    Have the car inspected and if it passes and you are happy with the price/value relationship, then buy it.

    UPDATE: I got in touch with the dealer.

    ( 1 ) Apparently they sold the car on 04/02 to a 2nd owner who drove it off the lot and used it for a month. Thus explaining the sudden increase in miles.

    The 2nd owner could not prove financial capability so the dealer had to confiscate the car and sent it in for reconditioning 05/20.

    ( 2 ) The dealer has verified the Touring voa email and will allow me to inspect the original invoice and rear shocks.

    ( 3 ) First OTD quote is:

    You can always ask for a lower price and the worst that will happen is that the salesman will say no.

    You are coming up on the end of the month. Always a better time to purchase any vehicle at any dealership as they tend to want to make more deals to meet objectives. Start by making an offer of at least $1,000 below what they are asking or whatever you feel comfortable with. The very least that can happen is they say no. Start negotiating from that point. Any savings is a plus!

    Woow I guess you are a good buyer, yesterday I purchased a prius 05 with 190000 miles and triangle of death on it for 4600-4800 dlls and I feel happy I have a civic hybrid with 45000 and must confess the feeling of the prius is better it seems more premium more floating in thw road.. Im considering wich one to sell or keep..

    End of month, you can get a killer deal, be strong and firm with your price.

    I bought my PiP there, you can ask for Gim Chu, he's very helpful.

    FYI, if you are buying cash, I would personally offer $11k OTD. You never know, I help my niece by her 05 Prius (top model), last year, under 100k miles, it was EOM, different Toyota dealer was asking $8999, I offered $7k OTD, left the dealer paying $7300 OTD.

    The thickness of new front brake pad lining is 11 mm (while new rear brake shoes will measure 4 mm) so the 9 mm front brake pad measurement is not terrible considering likely error in measurement by the tech.

    Also, if the prior owner intended to default on the purchase, s/he may have had no incentive to take care of the car during the short ownership period.

    UPDATE! Thank you to everyone for reading and your support.

    I test drove the car and had a family mechanic check the car.
    No evidence of any major accidents which matches the records.

    However there are a list of discoveries:

    ( 1 ) The dealer still has to prove to me that they didn't just reclaim the car from the 2nd owner, wash it and then just throw it back onto the lot.

    ( 2 ) There is no record of the transmission fluid ever being replaced. In fact the service record for the 30k was either never done, or done at another autobody shop and I just don't have access to records of it.

    The fluid was black. Note the car is approaching 90k.

    ( 3 ) The front Windshield was replaced with non-OEM ( Safelite SGC M-48 DOT65 ASI E )

    ( 4 ) Service Records for 30K and 50k are missing from dealer records.

    ( 5 ) Service for 35k 40k 65k were late.

    ( 6 ) While driving on highway, the dash board was rattling.
    Service records indicate the 1st owner asked this to be fixed two times. Seems like the fixes weren't permanent?

    ~|~RATTLE COMING FROM BOTTOM OF ""A"" PILLAR RUBBING

    AGAINST DASH. ~|~INSULATED TRIM FROM DASH WITH FORM TAPE.

    ( 7 ) The 2nd Key Fob is missing and I need to verify if it is a "dumb" black logo key or a SKS silver key on my next trip as well as a physical key for battery failures.

    I would do hybrid battery test to confirm all cells are up to specifications as I just had a hybrid battery failure at 102k due to 1 bad cell in the hybrid battery module, which I believe consists of 34 cells. This would be the most expensive repair that could happen. Testing will show if any cell is below specifications. It triggers the triangle of death when there is greater than 1 volt difference but not before. That would be a 3-4000 repair bill.
