Nebraska and Back Again: A Prius' Tale

    Took an unexpected trip to Nebraska this past weekend. Decided to drive Priapus to show my in-laws. Have to admit that having read some of the posts here about weird things happening between the 700 and 1500 mile marks, I was a tad bit apprehensive. After all, it would be better to break down near home than somewhere on an interstate. In the end, however, it was a happily uneventful trip. The weather was great and the company couldn’t have been better (if I don’t put that in there my wife will beat me up).

    Having spent a thousand miles and 18 total hours in Priapus, I’ve learned a few things. I’ve decided to list some of them here:

    I'm amused. I, too, went to Nebraska (Lincoln) this weekend, altho' it was not a last-minute decision, but a long-planned trip.

    I agree with you about the cross-winds, but I'm also kinda used to it. My previous car was a Forester -- taller and far less aerodynamic. And most of the other vehicles my road-trip crowd might take for such a trip are far worse (trucks, SUVs, minivans).

    I do wish there was more adjustability in the seat and the wheel. Other than that, I and my passengers were fairly comfortable. On the other hand, I believe in frequent stretch-breaks on long trips.

    will be taking my prius across on old US 66...sort of used to a bit of air pushing things around a bit, given when i fly the cessna, its a lot worse, so a few bursts of wind isnt a big deal...just "fly" it...passed the 1500mile mark around home with no anomolies, nor any problems, except wife yells at me about slowing down and braking, {like she's any better}...getting about 50mpg on the average with mixed driving...

    Mmmm, while there are admitedly few POI in Iowa, there are still a few. You missed the corn maze, I take it?
    Respectfully, I must disagree with your 'cruise control' statement. I find people in the midwest field states set their cruise for 1 mile over the speed limit and they won't get out of the fast lane....ever.

    I tend to set mine for 7 to 15 above, depending on how traffic's moving of course. I do camp out in the fast lane, because I figure anyone moving 80mph doesn't really belong in the slow lane, and anyone moving faster than that, on most highways, is insane and deserves to have to find their way around me :)

    Sorry to hear that your back and shoulders were sore. I just finished a long trip (see my Escanaba Order Tracking thread) without too much trouble. Perhaps the difference is not in how we adjusted the seat but in our heights.

    I agree about the Prius being (relatively) easy to clean. I was able to make sure there were no dead bugs remaining to attract the attention of hungry yellow jackets.

    Though after cleaning (touchless car wash and my attention to bug parts and water drips) I was sore from crouching at the bumper. Were you sore before the cleaning?

    The lack of forethought was due to a family emergency. And I'll admit that the Wednesday before the Friday drive I worked my back and traps pretty good at the gym. Didn't feel too bad otherwise, but when I was driving, my left trapezial would get sore all the way up my neck. Happened coming and going. Wife said the same thing.

    Of course I'm kidding about Iowa. I've spent some good time in Iowa City for business. Downtown IC is really really nice.
