I have a 2005 Prius with a navigation system (which was changed for an updated version soon after I got the car in 9/04). I would like to know if there is any way you can get an update without having to buy a new DVD from the dealer (which may cost about $250)?

Unfortunately there is no way to update unless you buy the disc from the dealer and that can be VERY expensive (like you said over $200!). If you live in an area that the roads are changing frequently (new development etc) then you way want to upgrade. I have a 2004 model with the 4.xx disc and I live in NYC. I absolutely do not need an update. If I need to search for a POI, I get out my iPhone and refer to google maps. I also have a spare PND that I carry with me at all times in case of emergency (Prius NAV failure!).

Best idea is to buy a PND and only use it when you notice the Prius NAV does not have new roads on it.
