I love my Nav system & use it to excess. I find the manual difficult to read & absorb though, so after mastering the basics I just find things by exploring. Recently I noticed something handy when you have more than one destination set.

The display, once you're under route guidance, shows the distance/time to your next destination, on the left hand side of the screen. By default when you have multiple destinations set, this shows how far to the first destination. The total trip time displays briefly at the beginning & I've often been frustrated by not being able to see the time to my final destination.

It turns out that this is a "live" button - if you touch it you can switch between the distance/time to any of the destinations you have set.

This is great for me since I sometimes have an optional first stop, depending on traffic.

Anyone else notice something cool you didn't know about in the Nav system after using it for a while?

I found out after going more thoroughly through the NAV setup menu that you can configure just about every icon and button to disappear when you press the <Off button, including the GPS indicator, map orientation, etc.

Press the menu button, then select setup on the screen. On page 3 of the setup is the <Off function setup option. Press 'Change' button, and you'll get a mock map display with all icons/buttons displayed. Those greyed will disappear when you select <off. See page 89 of NAV manual.

Another thing I found is that you can change the initial POI categories, which is the next setup 'change' option. That's on page 90, but its easier to just play with it.

Thanks for the info...another question- after entering a destination, how do I preview the route it is going to take? I figured out how it will show me the route on the map, but I want to see all of the names of the roads before I select that route (on one screeen if possible). Is there any way to do that?

I don't think there is a way to see all the streets for the 3 possible routes, but you can see part of the list. At least you can if you want to re-decide which route to take.

Check out route overview, then you can press Turn List for the chosen route.

Also, you can select Search Condition after pressing Route.

    Help Needed!

I wonder if my problem can be resolved by what you describe below. I punch in my destination before beginning to drive and the screen shows it is setting my route and destination. Alas this means nothing as later the emergency icon is highlighted (others are dark) and I am directed to (probably) the police station, hospital, or Toyota dealership. In other words the system locks up. I should mention the car and I are just fine. Been a proud owner for about 5 weeks now.
Any suggestions from anyone would be much appreciated!! - thanks

What happens if you press the "map" button on the steering wheel from this "locked up" screen?

Also, is there a button that says "Back" in the upper left hand corner of the screen you describe?

If so is it active or grayed out? If active what screen does it take you to when you press it?

Sorry, it's hard to be specific from memory - I'll try to remember to look when I go home from work tonight.

Pressing "map" shows the map and going "back" just takes me to the previous screen. This may be one for the dealership and warranty I fear. Appreciate the suggestions.

OK, I'm still a little confused, bear with me. When you press the map button & then are on the map screen, what is the problem?

You said you already put in your destination & got a route. So does the route show on the map screen?

Sometimes route voice guidance doesn't start until you get onto the route (or go a completely different way in which case it'll reroute you). Before that the route is just displayed as a blue line on the map.

Have you tried driving to your destination with the map screen on?

The other screen you described ["later the emergency icon is highlighted (others are dark) "] is the Destination screen, which is just used to *set* your destination. It is always locked when the car is in motion.

The map screen shows where I am at that moment and the voice guidance directs me to the nearest hospital or police dept!! When I go to the POI screen (that's what I should have said I guess) the emergency icon is highlighted and the others are dimmed ie I have NO choice. Frustrating.

Should also add that I have set the destination before leaving the driveway and no matter what I set it to - it ends up directing me to the closest "emergency" place.

OK, that is definitely a matter for the dealer, if you're being directed to a location other than the one you set.

This part is normal - you can't set a destination once you are moving (unless you mean this is the case when the car is stopped as well).

Before hitting the dealer on this, I would test a little more. When you set your destination are you are also pushing the 'replace' button?

Also, I don't recall the Emergency services feature all that well. Is there a 'panic' mode that one can choose to find the nearest medical or police location in an emercency? If so, maybe it needs to be reset?

Bruce has a good point. Make sure all existing destinations are cleared out that would be composing an existing route before programming in a new trip. The emergency destination would override any existing route, or so I would hope.

You can insert a new destination anywhere into an existing route, or you can replace an existing stop in your route with a new destination.

I found the 'preferred road' option useful on Saturday.

I was going to a house off Lowell St just east of I-95 in Peabody, MA. There is no Lowell St exit so the Nav mapped a route to the next exit then backtracked on Rte 1 South to Lowell St. This, by the way, was the route given to me when I went the first time 4 years ago. We have done that route 3 times.

BUT, you can get off 95 where it crosses Rte 1. I had been told this before making the same trip last summer. Rather than scrounge out the note I had made to find the exit number, I decided to give the Nav Lady a shot at it.

You find the area on the map, zoom in, press the ramp on the map then press 'preferred road'. You are getting on Rte 1 North but over half the distance to Lowell St is actually Interstate ramp. The "road" named "Ramp" is shown for you to confirm. Et viola, route change and no backtracking.

With the feedback I've read here, it's helped! Yes, I have been pressing "replace." When I press emergency icon it shows police, hospital, and closest Toyota dealer. Not sure if it's even possible to reset this icon.

Will delay visit to the dealer until I see the problems are consistent. It seems that sometimes the system works and sometimes it doesn't. Want to make sure the irregularity is the car and not me! Thanks.

I wonder if you maxed out the route it still wants to take you on with too many destinations.
