One of my biggest disappointments is this u-turn business with Nav.

Should this not be able to recalculate the route based on where you might be at the time. As in many areas you may know a better or shorter or quicker route than any that is available on the route list.
So you head out past the recommended turn and the gps is always trying to get you back to that route instead of recalculating a new route.
Am I missing something on the settings here?
I just get so tired of the unit constantly trying to take me miles out of the way to get back to the route that it thinks is best. Or wanting me to take U turns for miles and miles.
Other units I have used will recalculate and I would like to think this unit will also. That it surely is me!
    Thanks

There should be a "Recalulate Yes/No" option in the setup menu. There's one in the 2005 and I would be surprised if it didn't in the 2006.

The only time I was asked to make a legal U-Turn was when I was driving along a road that was headed toward a military base. The Prius didn't want me to go there, although it was legal and I would be within the base for a short while.

There is a setting that allows the Nav system to "automatically recalculate the route." When that setting is set to "on," the Nav system will completely recalculate your route under your new heading within about 10 seconds. Couldn't tell you off hand where to find the setting.

I have a 06 with nav and have read the nav manual and can't find a way to setup nav unit to auto recalculate the route instead of the U turn mentioned. If anybody can help with this it would be appreciated. Another question, On my Garmin 2620 it automatically scales the map according to distance to turn, I have to manually set scale on 06 nav unit?

My 2006 recalculates automatically. This past weekend, I was driving in familiar territory, so I just made a few "executive decisions" and drove the way I felt was better. She recalculated right away.

In one case, I drove a parallel street. She told me to turn toward her original street, but I resisted for several blocks. She just adapted and suggested the next corner, then the one after that, etc.

I am not sure about the setting in an '06 to turn off U-Turns, I have not looked for it.

The NAV system, any NAV system that I have used at least will do that (u-turns) if that is still the shortest/quickest route, it tries to keep you on it if possible. The NAV will eventually see that there is another shorter or quiker route and recalculate for that.

There is an option to "record" your route and then it will use that I think, but I have not used that option as of yet.

At first, I thought this thread was about the annoying U-turns where the road is completely open yet you get told to drive past point A, U-turn at point B, to get back to point A again. Those tick me off when I'm not familiar with the area and didn't notice I was driving right by my destination to come back in a few moments.

As far as recalculation goes. you do seem to have to drive beyind the point where turning around is still shorter before a different route is calculated. The semi-frequent commands to turn just after passing the turning point give you a chance to see what it will do about the missed turn. I kinda wish they'd recall the NAV system for some reason and give me one that has a big enough CPU to get the route figured out fast enough to always give a few hundred yards notice on turns. It's hit-and-miss, too. Two different time in CT from the same start point to the same destination, but only once (second time) did it tell me to turn in time...

Thanks for all the replies. I took the information gathered and went on a route. This time I took a shortcut and it did recalculate as you said. Problem was the Garmin 2620 did it a lot sooner and I just had not given the Prius Nav enough distance.

Still would like to know about the map scale. If a route on the Garmin had the first turn a 100 miles from your current location it automatically scaled to show the map to include your current position and the turn. Then as you got closer it kept scaling down for the same view, and eventually you were all the way down to the smallest scale. The Prius Nav doesn't seem to do that?

One other question. The Garmin would also give you a route to your destination, meaning down to side street and house. I maybe in a part of the country that doesn't have that detail. Question is, for those in populated areas, when you get down to the last part of your trip does is navigate you down residential streets to the address you programmed or does it say follow the map to destination?

Vaughn, mine does not auto-scale, I am not sure that is a function currently supported on the Prius Nav system.

As for guiding to my or any home address in my area (West Burbs of Chicago) it does that without a problem. But I have been to other smaller towns and it does not always know exactly where to go, and says follow the map. It all depends on the information available to the NAV system via the DVD is my understanding.

    Good luck,
    Phil
