Narrowing down battery issues

    Hi Everyone, this morning I turned on our 2007 Prius with 172k miles. It's been running great with no issues. Upon turning it on, I was hit with the Red Triangle + Check Engine + Code P0a80. I decided to clear the codes and see what happened. I also checked the 12v battery after a 30min drive and it read 11.7v. (Might be the problem?)

    My observations:
    - Hybrid battery doesn't charge, so engine runs constantly.
    - Hybrid battery fan seems to run on full blast until the car cools down.
    - Upon letting off on the gas, engine drag is much stronger than usual.
    - So far, no lights have come back...but something is definitely not running correctly.

    Thoughts?

    You have a hybrid battery issue. Not a bad idea to replace the 12v too, if it's more than 5 years old. But p0A80 is a bad hybrid battery

    That's what I suspected. I'm just surprised it happened out of the blue with no warning. Not even a decrease in mpg. Where do I begin?

    Check your inverter too, the fluid should be flowing when car is on. Take the cap off the coolant and look inside.. It's not crazy hot like a normal radiator.

    I wonder if the car is stuck in regen or b mode?

    I'm not sure if an inverter out would have this behavior.

    Hard to say the battery is bad if it's not getting a charge.

    But the car should shut you down if the traction battery voltage gets too low, similiar to running out of gas.

    The inverter also charges the 12 v battery from the traction battery. So it could be low bc the inverter is not charging.

    If needed you can charge the 12 v with the tab under the red cap where fuses are under the hood.

    But 11.7 volts after running makes me think either your 12v battery is toast or inverter not charging.

    I suppose it's possible it can't charge bc the traction battery is bad but usually the car would shut you down I believe if that one gets too low.

    Inverter handles current both directions.

    You would need to get another battery, or read some of the rebuilding threads here if you want to DIY.

    With 172k miles, probably wouldn't make much sense getting a new one. So rebuilt options are what you'll be looking for.

    Clean your traction battery fan blades may clogged blades or the intake is clogged Passenger side open rear door on left just inside there a grill about Shoulders height when sitting the fan about 2 feet back behind rug cover brush then blow out.

    Check coolent in all three area two tanks and radiator. When car turned off after a drive can you hear the pump under driver side headlight? Loud replace it. Move not moving replace it.
    Battery I would get the full side yellow top battery

    At 172,000 there is still a fair amount of life left in the car if you want to keep it.

    There reality is, though, to fix it is going to cost a few thousand if you need it to be reliable . An independent hybrid mechanic might charge around $2,250 - $3,000 depending on if you choose a rebuilt battery or a new one.

    It will cost even more if you go to a dealer. $3,500 - $4,500 or more, perhaps.

    Do you use this car for regular commuting or is it more of a "spare car".


    The advice from other folks on this thread is good. I'd be happy to troubleshoot with you over the phone if you need some help.

    No "might" about it.
    At 12.0 volts it is 50% discharged.
    Get that replaced first......and then check the charging voltage while the car is ON.

    Didn't I answer this same question before ? Or was that in a different forum ??

    Ok... so I'm getting a ton of good advice here. Trying to narrow down my steps:

    1. Check the inverter to see if there's flowing fluid.
    2. Replace my 12v battery
    3. If the above steps pass, move onto hybrid battery rebuild.

    I use it for the bulk of my commuting.

    What are you using to get codes?
    Can you watch the hybrid battery data live? (block voltages, SOC,)

    No, wrong.
    The next step would be to get the hybrid battery tested/inspected by a dealer or WELL qualified shop before you consider spending $1000 or more on something that you might not need yet.

    Ok, so I did a little more troubleshooting this morning after letting the car sit overnight. Here's what I found. (Not much we don't already know)
    - Red triangle is back, same code as before.
    - 12v battery read 14.1v. (?)
    - I checked the inverter and it appears there is a wobble in the fluid when the engine is running.
    - I've attached some images of stuff from the service page. Not sure what any of it means.

    There's really no need to do all the stuff you're doing. The good thing about the prius is the computers tell you what the problem is. There are numerous ECUs that monitor your car. You don't really have to do much to know the problem.

    Incorrect measurement. That high a voltage means that the car was running.......or in the READY mode at least.
    It needs to be OFF to check the actual battery voltage.

    In your opinion.
    Sometimes computers "lie".
    For instance, none of them will tell you in an unambiguous manner that the 12 V battery is weak.

    With a Bluetooth adapter and the Torque Pro app you can see all the hybrid battery block voltages.

    This will help narrow down if the hybrid battery is the issue.

    What app are you using with the Bluetooth adapter?

    I weighed all my options, and decided in the end to pay for a brand-new cells from Toyota with all of the warrantees and information in tact. My mechanic, Michael from Lexology, refused to let me purchase the battery and install it myself, so I purchased it installed for just under $3000.
    Subsequently I purchased a 2006 Prius that had been totaled with 100,000 miles on it for $1000. I sold the battery for $1500 and used the engine to replace the engine in my 2005 Prius when the engine died at 380,000 miles. Changing the battery took three hours. FYI

    Thank you everyone for the help. You are all great!

    Ideally I would like to keep the car another couple of years. I don't see myself driving it forever like some owners, but I only purchased it used less than a year ago. I knew this issue was a possibility when I purchased it. It's @ 172k right now. I see myself getting it to 250-300k.

    I'm going to get some quotes on rebuilds and see what it would cost me + the longevity. I find it hard to swallow anything over $2,000 right now. I just had a Mini Cooper go through a total engine failure / rebuild so I'm not wanting to shell out a lot more...
