    Hi All,

I went out to the garage, unplugged my new 2017 Prime Advanced, and started it up. Only 19.5 miles range was displayed on the screen! Temperature in my garage was about 56 degrees, and car has 450 miles or so. I was expecting to see around 25 miles range! Does the battery need time to break in?

The range 'learns' how the driver drives. So if you drive fast or uphill in the snow both ways, etc it will learn what to expect. When new, it starts out not knowing you and giving average range.

Mine has only 22 miles after my first charge, it increases one miles every 2 or 3 charges and now it's a little over 32 miles. It takes longer if you use HV.

The car comes from the factory at ~ 20 miles range and over the course of a few charges corrects to the actual driving results.

I don't know why the meter is not set to 25 initially but my guess is so that most owners get to see the range increase rather than have a fraction of new owners watch it drop. Toyota might also be devious here in giving owners a psychological push to drive the car in a manner that keeps pushing the range meter to higher numbers instead of just settling for 25-ish.

Thanks all for the wisdom! This is third time charging since new, and yes, I scheduled it to charge at 9:05 pm last night and it finished in about two hours. It remained connected until I drove it this morning.

I’m on my 12th or 13th charge (470mi on the odo) and the range finally hit 29 today.

Last week it crept up from 19.5 to around 27.

has it been 19.5 on all 3 charges? have you tried driving ev only to see how far you can go before the engine fires up?

You're not suggesting they encourage an owner to drive SLOW, are you?
That was the result of having that 'Instantaneous MPG' display so prominent in the first 3 gens of the gasser Prius.
This may have been what gave the Prius its reputation in the early years.

Actually it uses more fuel to drive SLOW, the trick is to take as little time as possible to reach the speed then glide.

Ah another EV Guess-O-Meter post. ;)

This thread could have been closed after Jimbo's post as it was well said.

Drive in EV on all back roads with hyper-miling experience and you will see that number soar over a few weeks.

Hit the highways on all EV and the number will likely remain in the low 20's.

It's all about your commute, how you drive, how much A/C you use and of course weather conditions in the winter.

Give it time the number will come up as you learn about the car and it learns about you:whistle:

    Say What?
Wind Resistance increases by the square of velocity.
Look up any plot on this, Slower is better at consuming Electrons or Gas.

If you really want to pinch the electrons or gas,,, drive slow.

Sorry if I didn't explain myself well enough, I was trying to say is when the vehicle starts moving from stationary on a back road with speed limit of 35 mph, it uses a lot of energy moving from zero to 35 mph. What I was trying to say in my last post was if you drive SLOW and prolong the time to reach 35 mph and then do the gliding, you are using more energy.

In my neck of woods, big pick-up trucks drive at 60 mph on a back road with speed limit of 35 mph. It is impossible to glide at 35 mph. sigh.

I once got a ticket for driving 43 mph in a 35 zone and I was gliding

    What is gliding?
To maintain a speed requires power.

Pulse and Glide, I use to use the technique on HCH and then on Gen3 Prius, but on Prime there really isn't any need for that. During gliding the speed gradually drops, but to maintain average speed of coasting, you give little pulse of power (i.e. ever slight push on gas pedal).
