My First Fill-up

    Just thought that this may be of interest to other new 2014 Prius Plug-in owners.
    I was consistently getting 45 mpg HV only from the end-of-trip summary screen. That got me worried as it is advertised to be 50 mpg city or hwy.

    On the other hand, I was getting 15-17 EV miles (mostly warm to hot days). Earlier today the fuel gauge started to flash and beep so I had the car filled up -- about 8 gallons.

    Odometer reading was 618 miles and I had about 8 full charges prior. If my math is correct, this works out to over 60 mpg.

    Is this possible?

    you betcha, congrats!(y) but a more accurate method is to go to the ev ratio screen. that will tell you exactly how many ev miles and how many hv miles.

    Just in case if you are interested.., you could use fuelly to track the fill-ups.

    I've found out that weather, terrain, and acceleration habits plays a huge role in MPG in HV and EV mode. I bought a used 2012 Plug-in about 3-1/2 weeks ago with 1 bar less than full, and managed about 650miles for a 8.1 gallon fill-up. So if I minus that 1 or so gallon missing in my tank when I start driving from the calculation, I got ~92.9 mpg.

    I don't know why, but it really annoys me when people post MPG numbers including EV miles. You're just fooling yourself if you think that's comparable to anyone else's numbers. It all depends upon your EV percentage. The more EV you use, the higher above 50mpg you'll be, but unless you have a free charger everywhere you park, those miles are still costing you some amount of money.

    Guess what.... I drove about 50 miles this weekend, all within about 10 miles of my house. I charged at home and away several times, and got "infinity" miles per gallon, as I didn't use any gas.

    I'm still working on my original tank of gas from the dealership, where I took delivery back in May. I'm now at 1200 miles. That doesn't mean that my car is incredibly efficient, it just means that I charge a lot.

    Exactly. I don't even bother looking at mpg anymore. I do two things instead:

    1) Calculate my overall cost per mile (using $4/gallon and my average $0.18/kWh). Based on my 55% EV miles lifetime, my cost is about $0.06/mile. I do a lot of city driving, and my previous 4-cylinder Camry averaged about $0.18/mile.
    2) Smile every time I pass a gas station and don't need to fill up.

    In some locales electricity is less than half of what you pay. Not saying they shouldn't figure in those costs, but it gets so cheap I can understand how it is easy to look over those costs.

    Personally, my EV miles are about a fourth or fifth of the cost of my HV miles.
