Well I Finally made it, I really didn't think I was going to hit 60MPG but after I got P&G down, added an EV and got a Scan Gauge it seems like I am staying above 60 most of the time.. If it was not for 80% interstate I would be able to get some really impressive tanks. I know its not as good as a lot of you guys get, but I am proud of it :).. I could have prob. made it more miles, I had just went to last pip about 20 miles before I got gas, but I get scared when I go to last pip..

Oh sure! Steal my thunder after I just bragged about my first 50+ mpg tank! :hurt:

But seriously, congrats! The way my learning curve is going, I hope to be joining this 60+ club really soon.

    God, Congrats to you!
I drive City mostly, 3 out of 5 days a week, interstate the rest. and average 48 MPG's I get my BEST mileage on the interstate...especially when there is no traffic in the very early morning or slightly stop and go traffic. What makes the most difference for you to get this kind of great mileage? I believe I am a good hypermiler but the proof is in the pudding (or consumption/energy monitor)

Wow, BEST mileage on the intersate? You live in the mountains for the backroads or especially congested area? I am on my second tank for the car and doing 65mpg (my first was 59mpg). 35% of my commute is highway, 5% downtown city, rest semi busy roads with stop signs and lights 25-40mph zones. The highway is not MY friend!

we are still hanging at 48 mpg. not really upset because of what the rest of the world gets per gallon but i was expecting an increase after 5k. we have kept tires aired to 42/40, made sure the oil wasnt overfilled and drive moderately. i guess its the highway driving and the a/c right now. maybe in a month we will see more of an increase in mpg, just in time for cold weather that will cut into it....LOL. ah well, its still making driving fun again with all the little things to track in the pursuit of MPG!! :)

First off, congrats to the OP for attaining 60+ mpg per tank, hope it is the first of many.

What speed do you drive on the highway? What is your "typical" commute (length of time and distance)?

I am not professing to be smart, I'm only relating my Prius driving experience. I am closing in on 3 k and hope the car puts out more MPG's after my first 5 k oil change. BTW, my interstate driving speed is between 50-60 mpg's and has nice long drive on country road. My City driving in Chicago is sometimes in the thick of rush hour, really not condusive to squeezing out eery MPG.

Excellent job sandman. I am struggling to hold 55 right now (360+ miles @ 2.5 gallons left according to scangauge) but my short trips are what kill me. I have found two things that really have helped me. The first was a driving lesson from Wayne Gerdes at Hybridfest. The second is using the BTA x-gauge setting on the scan gauge. It helps me to know just how much of the battery pack I am using at any given time, so I can tell when I am in a true glide and if necessary use the battery without the ICE starting up. And by knowing the SOC (I have two gauges) I can tell just how much it will allow me to pull from the battery without firing the ICE. I have decided to give up on not using the battery at all. I seen to get better mpg with judicious use of the battery. I try to keep the draw less than 20 amps. Under 10 is preferable.

PS. Wayne, Thank You again. Below is a pic of my drive while being coached by Wayne - it would have been better but I did not manage to execute all his instructions correctly.

    Congrats once again!

I don't worry about the 800+ mile tank. I don't stuff it in or run it nearly dry like some. Yeah, it would be nice to have one, but all it earns is some small bragging right.

Very nice work! I've been able to get mid-sixties on some RT commutes, but never been able to come close to maintaining that for a whole tank. Very nice work, particularly with your highway driving!

Hi sandman, good work! I've been agonizing over whether to get a scangauge or not, it sounds like you have had good success with it. What parameters are you monitoring? Also, what's an "EV"? Right now I'm averaging a little over 50 mpg.

    (Edit: EV=EV mode button?)

Nice Job 9G-man!! Welcome to the 60MPG club!!!

EV is a mod you can do it allows car to only run in electric mode.. It sounds good but if used wrong it can hurt your MPG's, but I use it at certain times and it helps..Its an easy mod you can do yourself..I done the headlight switch EV mod.. here is a link follow it to Evans write up on EV- mod
given by JimboK in this thread.
    http://priuschat.com/forums/prius-modifications/52967-technical-specs-electric-vehicle-mod.html

The parameters I watch are Water Temp a must if you plan on blocking grill..I also watch RPM's,IGN and current average trip MPG..I really like that I can see how I am doing on my MPG's when I try something new on my way to work and back without having to reset my MFD. But the main reason I got it is for the Water temp I plan on blocking my grill when cold weather gets here..I also like seeing my MPG go over 99MPG when I am gliding and going down hill. It also can be used to trouble shoot if you ever get a check engine light..Hope this helps..

I know there are threads here on P&G, but you may also want to check out Wayne Gerdes' article on the Prius at cleanmpg.com.

I just earned 785 mi on a recent tank. The vehicle is at 34,500 mi. I just rode the High Sierra Fall Century (bicycle) and drove across the Sierra Nevada over Tioga Pass (3,006 m) going and coming home. The cumulative mpg is at 51 mpg, but this takes paying attention every day.

Are you saying you got 785 miles out of a tank of gas and your MPG was 51??
That would mean you had to put 15.39 gallons in a 11.9 gallon tank??
    (15.39x51=785)
