The wheels on my 01 Prius were hazy and badly pitted. I decided to sandblast them and repaint them. I could have probably had a body shop do the work, or even had them powdercoated, but I did the DIY approach. I sandblasted them and painted them dark blue. I have a few photos of the project: Wheel before - Sandblasted - Painted - So far I like the contrast of the dark blue against the silver. Makes the car a little unique. Steve H.
When I read your description I was all prepared to not like them but they look good. Your grungy tires OTOH
The whole car needs a clean up after driving the salty roads. Before & after shots - Photo is a bit dark but... Steve
As far as painting/prep tips: Once the wheels were sandblasted, I taped/masked off the tire around the bead area. Some people have recommended using a large piece of cardboard with a hole in the center that is the size of the wheel diameter. Then you can just set the cardboard over the tire and don't have as much taping to do. I followed the tape with 2 coats of automotive primer. Then several coats of the finish color. When that was done and thoroughly dried (at least over night), I applied several coats of clear. I think that it is mostly important to be patient and allow for each coat of paint to dry properly. And paint in an area that is heated to 60+ deg. (Whatever is recommended on the paint can). Alsoo do not paint the item down on a dusty/dirty surface. If possible lay down a clean tarp, or use some sawhorses and plywood. My .02 Steve
Just a few more photos of the wheel painting project. Sandblasted & taped: Wheels getting primered: Primer coat: Hopefully at some point I can get a good "after" photo when the car is clean. Steve
